The manual for the HP Photosmart 5510 all-in-one says that you can remove the scanner lid to scan thick books etc.
I have pulled, pryed and tried everything but break off the hinges and it will not come apart.
Has anyone ever succeded in removing the lid?

It’s not easy, but I did mine without breaking it.
Open the Lid.
There slots holding the white background to the lid.
Apply some pressure on the middle part (i.e at the bottom of the white part) of the lid.
The white part will come off.
Open the lid of the All-in-One and apply pressure (outward) on the bottom part exactly in the center part of the lid .
The lid of the All-in-One can now be removed..
To reinstall reverse the process.
HP apologizes that the solution to open the lid is not in the manual.

When you know it is simple:
- put the lid vertical
- push it out, at both sides, horizontally, and away from the printer's screen.
The white scan field can stay where it is.

Here is a post explaining how to remove the lid on a Photosmart 5510 printer. It has some pictures that are real helpful.
