Trouble printing Avery products

Hello everyone. I have a Photosmart 4580 and love it for the most part. The problem I am running into is when I try to print Avery products like the business cards, it screws up the allignment. I use the official templates which should print them properly, but I think the printer is not taking into account the margain set by the template and starts printing about a 1/4 of an inch early. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am having the same problem.  I can print my business cards to a piece of plain paper, and they get printed correctly.  But when I print them on Avery business card paper, they print without the top margin.  Same document, same printer.  I am printing from OpenOffice 3.1 on Snow Leopard to an HP Photosmart C4280.  I created my own template as a table of 5x2 buiness cards.  I am printing in landscape mode since I am trying to make vertical business cards.  The print preview looks fine.  The printing on plain paper looks fine.  Printing on Avery business cards skips the leading margin.

To be sure, I saved my document as a PDF file.  I tried printing that from the Preview application which ships with Snow Leopard.  Once again, the document printed without the top margin on Avery business card paper.

Therefore, this is a problem either with HP's printer or printer drivers.  At first I was using the printer driver which shipped with Snow Leopard.  Then I downloaded the HP printer software and printed using that.  Doesn't matter.  Same problem.

HP, please fix your printer problems.  I already wasted 4 sheets of Avery business cards + two sheets of regular paper + a lot of HP ink.  Is HP going to reimburse me for that?  This is not good at all.

I discovered a few more things about the HP bug while printing Avery business cards.

I tried printing a similar document which would print fine with plain paper on my HP C4280 but not on Avery business card paper, but this time on Linux.  Using the hp software for Linux, the same thing happened as on OSX.  Namely, the business cards printed fine on plain paper but without the leading margin on Avery business card paper.  That would indicate that this bug is either in the printer itself or in common code shared between the driver for OSX and the driver for Linux, if there is any.  Since it prints without the leading margin on Avery business card paper even when using the same exact printing settings that worked fine on plain paper, I suspect this problem is in the printer itself: firmware or paper handling hardware, etc.

Next, to be sure that this problem only happens on my HP printer, I took my Macbook to a friend's house and plugged in his Canon MP460 printer.  I printed the same business card document on Avery business card paper using Mac OSX Snow Leopard.  This time, using the Canon printer, the business cards printed perfectly the first time!  The leading margin was included so that the business cards were properly aligned on the page inbetween the perforations.

I have used HP printers for several years.  My last non-HP printer was an IBM Proprinter dot matrix printer in the 1980's.  Unless HP fixes this mess, my next printer will not be an HP.

I had the same problem with my HP C4780. I got out the old HP 2175 and now have no problem printing out my avery business cards.

Thank you for the info.  This seems to be an HP hardware problem as others have experienced it too!

I have lost faith in HP when they ship flawed hardware and don't even try to fix it.  I have owned HP printers since my IBM ProPrinter in the late 1980's.  I now am very suspicious of HP products.
