This error seems to be persistent, and only pops up when one changes ink.  In my case, the printer works fine and then this error message pops up.  Then I reset, then i pops up again.

It appears to be due to some other issue that is software related, or firmware related.

It is not obvious what "service" shoud be done.  Since the ink system actually works fine, until it does not.

Then it works fine after it is reset..

What pray tell, needs to be servied.

Dear All:

I just got the Ink System Failure message after it worked fine for a day.  It will clear for a while, or if you turn off and on it will go away, or if you do a partial reset.  To get to the configuration and reset menu you need to hold down the * key and then punch the # key and then type in 123.  However, nothing gets rid of this permanently.

It may be related to not using HP INK, which was the contention on one forum.   Or it may be a way to sell more ink.  Which is what an HPemloyee posting annonymously claimed.  In any event, it is impossible to completely get rid of this error.  It keeps recurring.  This time it went one day without getting this error.  According to one posting, you need to power down and remove the battery that saves the settings.  I do not know if any of this is true, but the official word is that you need to replace the unit if it continues.

I have decided to replace the unit.  After careful study, it appears that this problem is endemic to HP printers of this type.  So I have decided to purchase an EPSON  WorkForce Pro WP-4020 or WP-4530 or WP-4540.  They all are top rated and they do not have discussion of rapid failure or this ink issue or hours and hours of tech support which does not resolve problems  The top two have large $100 rebates, so buying straight from EPSON would cost you respectively $149, $199 or $299.

I bought HP because I had 30 years of good experience with them.  I will never do that again without research.

The error can not be reset, this is a failure of a capacitor on the board. If you are electricaly inclined you can fix it for under a dollar. It needs a new 330 uF 10V Capacitor.

I just would like to thank you andys6631 !

I have change this 330uF 10V capacitor and everything is working perfect now  with my Photosmart C7280 !!

Where is the location of the capacitor on the circuit board?

I suppose it’s a fat one easy to spot. Do you know how many are there on that board?

Thanks in advance
