Would anyone know why my Photosmart C7280 will not accept an hp magenta cartridge. The display reads "The following ink cartridge cannot be used after device initialization and must be replaced." it is possible this cartridge was an unopened installation unit. But, I don't know why that would make a difference. Thanks for any help. jr

It does make a big difference. The printheads are initially primed with dilute ink to prevent clogging while the printer sits before being purchased. The initial cartridges have special concentrated ink that is formulated to mix properly with the dilute ink in the printheads. Once the mixing has been done the proper ink concentations will be in the ink system. The next cartridge installed will need to be the standard retail cartridges which have normal onk concentrations. This printer will enforce this.
Where would you get an unopened host cartrdige? There is now a printer somewhere that needs its host cartridge....

Does anyone know where I can get a set of host cartridges. I just purchased a used c7280 to replace mine that died. When I tried to put my old cartridges in the new (to me) printer, I got the error message "Wrong cartridges - use the introductory...". Ok, so can I buy these anywhere.

Have tried tech support, product sales, total customer care and have struck out. I might as well be talking to the guy at Radio Shack. Does anyone know if any of the third party ink companies would understand this problem and be able to help?

Since each printer ships with a set of host cartridges it would be very unlikely any third parties would have bothered to invest in these cartridges as the demand would be minuscule.
I would suggest calling tech support and tell them you need host cartridges, part number 5069-7155. You may find some suppliers through a Google search if tech support cannot help.
