laserjet 9040 tray switching

Printer will not change from tray 2 to tray 3 or vice versa automatically.  The green check button needs to be pressed when each tray is empty to change to the other tray

Re: laserjet 9040 tray switching

Hi.

The design of the printer is to allow the device to make decisions based on what is requested from the driver and settings on the control panel.

Usually when the printer will not automatically switch between trays there is a setting that needs to be changed either on the printer or on the host PC.

If you set the paper size to Letter but do not set a tray to pull from, the printer will automatically select the highest capacity tray that meets the type and size criteria in the print job.

If you set the paper size to Letter and set the tray to 2, then the behavior is dependant on a setting.

The following is a from the user guide located here:

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00191861/c00191861.pdf

On page 173 there is description of the System Setup Submenu called TRAY BEHAVIOR.  Within that sub menu is a setting called USE REQUESTED TRAY.

USE REQUEST TRAY can be set to one of two values:

  • EXCLUSIVELY (Default) :  The tray specified in the job should be used and the printer will not automatically switch.
  • FIRST : The tray specified will be used first unless it is empty, then it will switch to another tray that has the right size and type.

Check to make sure that the  PC's driver is not defaulting to a specific tray.  If there is a need to default to a specific tray, then consider changing the USE REQUESTED TRAY setting to allow the printer to switch trays.

I could not locate another menu setting or driver setting that would affect the switching between trays.
