This just happened to me and they apologized and offered to sell me a discounted printer for my trouble.  It turned out the reasonably replacement they were offering was the same price they were selling the printer in their online store (and more than you can buy it elsewhere).  It was just a ploy to make sure that their unhappy customers stayed with HP.

I put some oil on the gear mechanism then moved the white cylinder piece along with a small screwdriver and now the printer works!

Worked for me too but had to move the white piece inside with a small screwdriver.

This solved my issue too.  I had to apply a generous amount of WD40 and move the cogs around for a few minutes, but it's working again.  Can't believe how much plastic crap is inside these printers.  And this is a pathetic issue to have to deal with in the first place.  Is there any quality control or design engineers left at HP?

But anyway, it's fixed and working thanks to this forum.

I have been fighting this failure to pick up single sheets of paper from the paper tray for months.  The stream feeder also is quite unreliable.  It is VERY unusual to be able to scan or copy 10 sheets without a misfeed.  My 8500 will sometimes pick up paper from the paper tray, sometimes not.  You send a print job to the printer and never know what to expect.  You can't run a business with that kind of uncertainty.

HP finally agreed to replace the unit.  The replacement unit was DOA.  It would not even get past the alignment phase.  It kept telling me the black ink cartridge was empty, when it was actually full.  To be sure I opened (and wasted) a brand new black cartridge - with NO results.

The HP Officejet 8500 Pro is such a crappy device that HP immediately came out with an 8500A.  This is the unit that they should be replacing the bad 8500s with.  Instead, they keep sending out "refurbished" 8500s that don't work as well as the units they are replacing.

I have been using HP printers for years.  Recently, I have had a G85, 7410 and now this 8500.  All have lasted about 2 months past their 1 year warrantee period and then gone into the dumper.

HP USED TO BE A GOOD COMPANY!  THE PRODUCTS IT IS PRODUCING AND SELLING NOW ARE GARBAGE! SUPPORT FOR THESE DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS IS WORSE THAN THE PRODUCTS THEMSELVES.

I HAVE SPENT 6 HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH HP TECH SUPPORT TRYING TO RESOLVE THESE ISSUES.  INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE 8500 WITH AN 8500A, THEY WANT TO SEND ME A NEW PRINT HEAD.  PROJECTED DELIVERY IS MARCH 7 - WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH A DEAD PRINTER UNTIL THEN?

Worked for me as well. Thanks for saving me 200.00, and being able to get some important papers printed for tonight. Can't believe HP can't print this fix. Wait a minute . . . sure I can! This is the new, and unimproved HP. Simply amazing.

I solved my problem by returning the printer to CostCo.  They gave me a full refund and I got another printer.  They warrenty their printers for two years.  I had mine for 1 1/2 years
