psc 1350 prints a test page every time it gets turned "on"

My father's psc 1350 prints a test page every time it gets turned "on", wasting paper and ink, and it drives me crazy every time I come to visit!  Is there a way to turn this feature off?

He currently is running Vista Home premium on an HP desktop, but I believe he had the same problem when using XP on an older computer.

The "test page" has "to get best quality, follow the steps using this sheet" printed in English at the top left of the page, and then printed in 8 other languages. Below that is a three-step series of instructional pictures, the third of which is a finger pressing a dark button at the bottom of the row of buttons.  The remainder of the page, about 2/3 of the page, is a series of black, grey and yellow lines.

After printing the sheet needs to be loaded into the scanner and then you press the button as shown on the sheet to complete the alignment process.  Once the alignment completes it will not print another alignment page until the next time a cartridge is replaced.

Yes, that's fantastic advice, but what do you do when you have a whole box of blank ink cartridges for a 1350 that works just fine, but the glass on the scanner is broken? READ ON BEFORE REPLY. Let's recap and expatiate: I cannot scan the test page without glass on the scanner. I cannot afford a new printer. My printer prints just fine. I have already made a major investment in a lot of spare ink. Please provide a real answer to the question, and don't be afraid to get technical with me. Thanks and best regards, Adam

This is stupid design fault.  There should be an override built in.

Actually the "test page" is an alignment page, used to properly align new cartridges when they are installed.  It is also used to set the proper operating voltage for the printheads.  There is an override - just complete the alignment process following the directions on the page and it will not repeat until the cartridges are changed.
