hi there,
could you provide the community with a little more information to help narrow troubleshooting? What operating system are you running?

Am on XP . Since posting I have tried the suggested trouble shooting tips on HP and got no result. Since the printer is on sale, I just bought a new one which should give me a year's warranty. Will keep the old one so if anyone can help me with it, i'll just have two of them working. thanks again

Hi there,
Try downloading and running the scan diagnostic utility located here. It can fix a lot automatically and give us a better idea of what is going on with the printer. Let us know the results.
Best of Luck!

I appreciate the help. Tried the scan diagnosis and got a message scan driver missing or corrupted. Removed old software and reinstalled new software with a my original disc and then tried again with a download directly from hp. It didn't solve the problem. I am not computer literate enough to try anything else and the printer is not expensive enough to warrant a service call. I can still print from the computer at least. Thank you for all the trouble.
