won't print - says load paper

My printer is a HP 309.  I was printing yesterday and working just fine.  Ran out of paper and has been a nightmare every since.  It acts like it is looking for something and runs the wheels.  Then finally take the 4x6 paper tray and tries to retrieve paper.  It either get jam's, or comes out blank, or goes back and error message that I need to fill the tray.  Which already has paper in it.  Then I finally got it to print and it is missing aboue an inch (therefore it doesn't print on the entire 4x6).  What's up with this and can I fix it?

Very frustrating......and very frustrated. 

 

I have the paper all the way to the front of the tray, meaning closest to me, not closest to the roller.

This article should have the steps you need to resolve your out of paper error. If this does not help you may try clearing jams with this article here. Lets us know if it helps.
