6840 deskjet - replacing ink cartridge

I can't seem to replace the ink cartridge in this printer.  There is a vertical black plastic plate that is preventing the cartridges from sliding out the front.  This plastic plate has a sticker that has two pictures of what appears to be a start button - one with an arrow pointing to it, and the other with lines around it (indicating that it's lit?).

The diagrams in the ink cartridge instructions don't show this plastic plate.  Can anyone tell me how to get the old cartridges out, so I can put the new cartridges in?

I expect I'm missing something embarrasingly obvious.

Hello HennepinHistory,

Sounds like the Servicestaton is blocking the cartridges. Normally this should move out of the way when you open the cartridge replacement door. Here's the catch that most people sometimes forget, the unit needs to be turned on, if the unit is not turned on the servicestation will remain in place and replacing cartridges is not possible. Let me know if this was the problem.

Re: 6840 deskjet - replacing ink cartridge

I did have the unit on before, but the plate only slid down when I fiddled with it and the power (green) light was blinking.  Then the plate slid up and down a lot.  I did manage to replace one cartridge when the plate was in the down position.

I think I'll be able to replace the next one - thanks so much for your help!
