Re: Best install method: usb or ethernet or wireless

the printer and it's software will always use the ports, and they dont need to be "configured" or chosen by you. They're done automatically. The problem arises when firewall or security programs block communicatin through these ports. Thankfully, HP has released a list of ports that need to be unblocked by the firewall program(which essentially are the ports that it comm. through).

Re: Best install method: usb or ethernet or wireless

Is there a speed advantage or disadvantage to using the Ethernet connection in lieu of USB to a single printer?  I am connecting an OfficeJet 8500 Pro to a computer with XP operating system.  I don't intend to use it in wireless mode.

Thanks

Re: Best install method: usb or ethernet or wireless

The connection type does not have any significant bearing on the printer/scanning speed. Just use USB if you'll only use one PC to print/scan, and use the Ethernet cable if you want to share the printer with all PC's on your network.
