C4580 install fails. scan.msi errors

I am trying to install a C4580 AIO using the CD Rom that comes with the unit, however the install fails.

Then, I have tried to use the Full Driver package from the HP website, and get the same error. The error says that the file scan.msi cannot be found in c:\windows\installer directory.

Using the forums, I found that I can extract the following files and the installer should work. This is explained in All In One F4180 msi scan fatal error 1316/1603 and the fix listed is:

------------------------

FIXED!

   1.
Insert the product software CD into the CD-ROM drive on the computer.
   2.
Right-click StartExplore and then click . Windows Explorer opens.
   3.
Locate and select the CD-ROM drive that contains the product software CD.
   4.
Locate and double-click the SetupScan and then the folders to open them.
   5.
Double-click Data1.cab or Scan.cab to open the contents of that file.

Extract, rename, and save the files

   1.
Locate the following files, right-click them, select Extract , and save them to the Windows Desktop. Leave Windows Explorer open after extracting the files.
          *
            F1922_TWUNK_16.EXE.096CD9AA_35CA_455C_ADCB_36EF6B7F7892
After extracting this file to the Desktop, right-click it and rename it to TWUNK_16.EXE .
          *
            F1923_TWUNK_32.EXE.096CD9AA_35CA_455C_ADCB_36EF6B7F7892
After extracting this file to the desktop, right-click it and rename it to TWUNK_32.EXE .
          *
            F1928_TWAIN.DLL.096CD9AA_35CA_455C_ADCB_36EF6B7F7892
After extracting this file to the desktop, right-click it and rename it to TWAIN.DLL .
          *
            F1939_TWAIN_32.DLL.096CD9AA_35CA_455C_ADCB_36EF6B7F7892
After extracting this file to the desktop, right-click it and rename it to TWAIN_32.DLL .
          * That's it folks:smileyhappy: weird problem !!!

 ------------------------

I did the above and it did not help any. So the next thing I did was locate the scan.msi file on the CD Rom that came with the C4580 and place it into the c:\windows\installer directory, since the file was not there and the error was indicating that the file could not be found.

I got by that error but now get the following:

Error 1334.The file 'DizzyInis.dll.FF4F4AF1_8737_4AF6_AE69_9A5AA1AD1FD8' cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in cabinet file 'Scan.cab'. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.

I have checked scan.cab on both the CD-Rom and the downloadable versions of the installer and they do not have the DizzyInis.dll.FF4F4AF1_8737_4AF6_AE69_9A5AA1AD1FD8' file.

The closest thing to that file name in the scan.cab file is named  dizzyinis.dll.50FC31D7_77FB_4B46_AFC8_766CCE46DD0C

 ------system specs--------

Vista SP 1

Kaspersky Internet Security 8 (tried both disabled and enabled at the time of install)

Firefox and IE installed

Any help with this install would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: C4580 install fails. scan.msi errors

Still no go. Have downloaded and attempted to install now at least 50 times. Tried from CD again and again and again...

The fact that I have read nothing but reviews that gave horror stories about the C4580 makes me wonder if the install will ever work.

I am sure if I called tech support and "Bob" answered, he would give me the same ineffective support that I have seen others get when it comes to operating and installing the C4580.

Wondering if anyone has started a Class Action against HP yet for selling equipment that won't install due to incomplete software packages.

Some said to make sure that your printer is "Certified for Vista". The C4580 is listed as such but I wonder how the install could have happened?

To play devil's advocate, I guess MS could have done a critical update to Vista that rendered the unit useless, but then again if I can't get pass the point of installing then what's MS got to do with it?

Re: C4580 install fails. scan.msi errors

I would suggest you download and install the latest verion of Windows Installer on your PC and retry the installation.

Download Link for Windows Installer 4.5

Re: C4580 install fails. scan.msi errors

Ummm yeah...

Ya see, I copied the scan.cab file to the c:\windows\installer directory and got past that part.

Then I got errors that a file is not found in scan.cab itself.

I viewed the .cab and saw that indeed the file is NOT in the cab.

So, the scan.cab is INCOMPLETE. I then went to look at the basic exe file, extracted it and examined the scan.cab file that was in the installer. The "basic" scan.cab had the missing file!

So I got the missing file, extracted it from the .cab and placed it into the scan.cab from the "full version" of scan.cab

------- ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME SO FAR? ------

I restarted the installer and got another file missing error in scan.cab but this is for a different file within the .cab

I go to the "basic" scan.cab and find the file. I place it into the "full" scan.cab and re-run installer.

Yet ANOTHER file is missing in the scan.cab

--------- SO FAR, that's 2 missing files from the scan.cab that is offered to the public. --------------

I do the same copy add thing and come across a 3rd file that's missing from the scan.cab.

At this point, I go looking for a different copy of the installer and find one that is from 3/18/08. The other two I had were dated Oct. 08.

I get this installer, try my luck and run into the same kind of problems.

So I open up what I am calling "march installer" and open the scan.cab file and lo and behold, the file missing from the two Oct. 08 installers is in this .cab!

I grab the file from "march installer" and place it into my new "frankenstien" scan.cab file which has the parts that were missing but are being added manually.

-----------

I have at this point found FIVE files that the Oct. 08 "full" scan.cab does not have.

WHAT THE HECK, HP? Do you NOT test your installations on a clean machine? Didn't remove the old scan.cab from c:\windows\installer directory when you ran your check?

DO YOU HAVE MONKEYS compiling your code?

VERY FRAKING SLOPPY!

When I get home and pick up where I left off on my file hunt, I hope to find all of the missing parts of the scan.cab file and be able to install my fraking AIO.

How many thousands of purchasers have had to go thru this torture that do not know what they are doing when it comes to .exe and .cab files?

-------------------

Just to let you know, I am copying all of my posts on this thread and putting them out on Facebook to ensure that no "accidential removals" of this thread happen from online. Also twittering about it as well.

Maybe I can do the tech support's job and FIX THIS and not just say "Oh.. get a new installer"

Sheesh!

I have the all in one too.  Funny that it it has never worked due to the same errors you mentioned, so I call customer service and they ask for a credit card to charge me for tech support.  <text deleted>
