C5280 All-in-one - PC runs in slow motion

[ Edited ]

Equipment: C5280 All-in-one, P3-667 WinXP SP2, 1G RAM

Problem synopsis:

After installing standard updated driver package the PC starts to operate slower and slower.

Benchmarking software shows a drastic loss of processing performance after installation of HP Software. After uninstalling the software the performance is normalised once more.

But my client wants to use the printer, so clean installation is undertaken again. Fine, except for complete loss of performance.

Email & other programs work at correct performance, but booting-up takes 8 minutes without password interference.

Trying to run HP Scanner software results in the most dramatic performance slow-down I've seen in 22 years of computing.

It takes 5 minutes to open scanner software alone, each part of the HP software is similarly snail-paced.

Even the DSL connection seems to be suffering a slow-down.

What on earth is going on ??

If I remove the HP software & device, all is restored as expected.

I have tried other USB leads, I am unsure if it is anything to do with the only connector on-board the device - an 'old-style' USB 1.1 female.

How this device can purport to be USB 2 in that instance I do not know.

If anyone has any brainwaves as to my next direction I would love to hear them.

Re: C5280 All-in-one - PC runs in slow motion

Just a few basic questions,

Is there a more up-to-date driver from HP by this time?  Are you sure you got the right driver?  I've seen oddities in the HP support web pages.

The down-level USB port (1.1 vs 2.0) might be one cause. Could you install a USB 2.0 port in a PCI slot?

Are there other system components that need driver updates?

How much RAM is installed?

Is there HP software components running at startup?  Try autoruns.exe from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
