Dexter,
Thanks for the solution. I've had an OJ L7780 for a year and haven't been able to use full feature components from my PC. Tech support has been useless. I've worked with them about 8 times over the year. I decided to try again when I upgraded to Win 7 and HP recently made the Win 7 download available.
The installation error was the same so I researched the web again and found your solution. The only additional step I had to take was a level 3 uninstall prior to reinstalling the download. Thanks again.
Joe

There should be an uninstaller on the driver download page. This has various levels of uninstall becuase HP can't right drivers properly in the first place.
Normally it works okay but the last time I used it it lost the permissions on the registry keys in the registry which couldn't be fixed so it was restore from backup time.
It time people who wrote drivers that uninstall should mean just that remove everything. Sadly HP aren't the only ones that write poorly written uninstallers.

This was the most frustrating 2 nights since buying this printer last July. I couldn't get it to install as a wireless printer and none of the previous solutions posted on this forum worked.
So I searched for more HP C7280 problem installs and found a forum on techguy.com. There were many advanced technical answers that had to do with editing the registry keys, etc. None of which I did since I don't want to mess with anything at the level.
Then while reading through the posts, there was one that caught my eye because it was simple enough for me to do and never mentioned before in any other forum posting I had found. It was the 2nd to last reply to the original post... short and sweet... and it worked for me. Maybe you can try it for yourself.
Here's the link to the actual forum page I found http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/83609
QUICK RECAP:
- I'm running an HP Pavilion with XPSP3 and was switching from USB connection to wireless for my already installed HP C7280.
- I configured the wireless network directly on the printer successfully and printed out the specs.
- I did a L1 uninstall and then tried to reinstall as a network printer but I kept running into the "service does not exist error".
- I ended up performing a L4 uninstall since all others were unsuccessful.
- Also did the networkdevicemanager install/repair/uninstall with no success.
- Downloaded latest drivers, patches, utilities as suggested earlier in this thread. Nothing worked.
- Ended up doing a USB connection FULL package installation just to complete the install.
- Went back on the web to find another solution... here's the link of the forum I found my solution on http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/83609
6-cant-install-printer.html (it's the second post from the bottom)
Here's what I did:
- I took the HP Network Configuration Page that I printed out when I linked my printer to my wireless network and got an IP address.
- Opened PRINTERS & FAXES and selected ADD A PRINTER.
- Selected LOCAL PRINTER and let it run through the detection process (even though it's not physically connected).
- Then when it errored out, I clicked next and got to the SELECT A PRINTER PORT option.
- I chose CREATE A NEW PORT and left it at the default STANDARD TCP/IP PORT and clicked next. This launched the TCP/IP PRINTER PORT WIZARD.
- I entered the IP address listed for my printer on the HP Network Configuration Page printout and named my printer.
- When it came to the driver selection, I chose HP as the device and HAVE DISK for the drivers and clicked next. Then I chose the autorun.inf file off the CD and selected HP 7200 series and clicked next.
- Then I got the successful installation window, but the machine ended up doing a lot of writing from the CD to the SYSTEM 32\SPOOL FILE before it initialized the PRINT TEST PAGE.
- Then the dialogue window appeared asking if the PRINT TEST PAGE was successful and a couple of seconds later my printer started printing! I saved the printer test page because it had all the info including additional file names/locations on it. May need this later (who knows).
- I then installed the upgrade/patch files from HP to get the additional printer software on my machine. Yay! It was nice to finally have my PC talk to my printer again. And I'm able to use all that other software for the printer too.
Hope this helps you... it was a lot easier and quicker than all the other stuff I did before and I can't believe it worked.
Good luck with your install.

First off, THANK YOU, CHRIS! I've spent nearly a week trying to re-install the Photosmart D7260 drivers to my mother's computer since it crapped out during maintenance. You've saved my hair, my bacon, and my mother's hair as well. I've already given you Kudos for your post and I'll bookmark it when I'm done. I needed to express my gratitude by doing more than just clicking on the Kudos button, though.
Thanks again!

Thank You, Chris
The part about installing the printer to work wirelessly was flawless and superb !! I will go to the next step of going to the HP website and downloading all the software features. by the way, my kudos to you for coming out with this quick fix to this problem (the big headache it was).
