Can't Configure/Setup over Wireless Network (PS C5580)

I've installed a Photosmart C5580 all-in-one printer, which is installed to an Airport Extreme access point.

 

Installing the HP software (on various Macs) works ok, however the Setup Assistant fails because it can't locate the printer. The initial screen asking the user to select a printer is blank - selecting the option for "printer is not shown" does cause the printer to appear on the list. However, selecting continue generates a message indicating that if the printer isn't available on the list, I need to download a new installer from HP (Which I've done, with identical results).

 

Note that I can print to the device with no problems and it's visible in System Preferences.

 

Is setup supported across a wireless link? Or does the device need to be physically attached to a computer?

Disappointing, seems that HP Support doesn't actually read the forums. Pity.

 

In any event, an update for others with similar issues.

 

I was able to get Setup to run by attaching the printer directly to a computer using a USB cable. It's not clear that it actually made any sort of difference, since about all that appeared to happen was that it gave me the chance to register, and installed some goofy widget to track ink levels.

 

So, while I appear to be "setup" I still have the issue that I can't scan.

since you're connecting this printer to Mac's, you should've created this thread in the Mac Printing section. im guessing most people in these forums are fimilar with windows and not Mac. so that may be why no one responded.

Thanks for the reply.

 

I don't quite recall how I ended up in this specific category, but given that the printer is printing, and that I was having an install/setup issue, I probably assumed that the "Install and setup" category was the proper one to post in.

 

As it happens, I earlier was in the Mac printing forum (reached via a search) and noticed that another person is reporting similar problems with this device. Like my message, it's been there a week with no response. So I think my original statement stands.
