Can't connect Deskjet 6988 wirelessly

I have a new HP Pavillion Elite d5100t running Vista Home Premium (64-bit) SP1.  I am also using Norton Internet Security.  The PC is connected to a Netgear DGN2000 Wrieless-N router/DSL modem.  I can't get my DJ6988 to connect wirelessly.  I first tried the Secure Easy Setup with the WPS buttons but that did not work.  The router reported that no device was found and the wireless light on the printer kept flashing and the network light never came on.  I had the same result even with the Norton firewall turned off.

Then I tried the instructions in the network guide for configuring the printer for a software firewall.  I disabled the firewall, connected the printer with the Ethernet cable and connected to the printer EWS.  I gave the printer the static IP address and then set that IP as a trusted site in the firewall.  I then started the printer software installation.  The install found the wired connection and I followed the instructions to set up a wireless connection.  After removing the cable the install program found the printer wirelessly and completed with everything seeming to be ok.  However a test page did not print and the network light on the printer never stopped flashing.

I went into the printer properties in control panel and manually entered the IP address and that did not help.  I also went into the router and reserved the IP addres using the MAC and host name from the printer report.  That did not help either.  I don't know what else to do.

Re: Can't connect Deskjet 6988 wirelessly

I have the same problem but using IE7. Windows Vista does not recognize the printer, no wireless, no bluethoot.

The printer works with USB however I can't install the software completely, it does not work wired also.

My network is fine the wireless works well with Ipod and the bluethoot works well with my phone.

So what is the problem with this printer?

Re: Can't connect Deskjet 6988 wirelessly

I have solved my problem.  It was my fault that I followed the instructions in the printer manual and not the router manual.  What I did was I hit the setup button on my router and then hit the button on the printer.  What I did not realize is that hitting the button on the router generates a new SSID (why, I don't know).  The right way to do it for my Netgear router is to log in to the router (in Internet Explorer) and initiate the setup that way.  When doing it through the router login it preserves the network settings.  My printer works just fine wirelessly now.

Re: Can't connect Deskjet 6988 wirelessly

Print a report from the 6988, using the report print button.  That will tell you the URL of the printer, and whether you're connected via wire or wireless.  If you're wired, remove the RJ if you want wireless.  You may have to tell your firewall to let the printer talk to your network and computer as well, but that's a story for another day.

Another thought.  Be sure your wireless net is (b) or (g) enabled.  If you are using draft N, set the router to mixed.  And be sure there are enough addresses available for assignment by your router that there's room for the printer.
