Can't locate Deskjet 1415 on Mac OSX4.11

I had to archive and install my operating system, after which printer couldn't be 'found'.

So I uninstalled printer software, and reinstalled.

Printer is turned on and connected to computer, but isn't recognized.

Installation instructions at following links are contradictory. Warning message says not to connect USB cable until software instructs to do so, yet step by step instructions say connect cable, then install softaware.

 

I have installed both ways, and never get instructions. Upon installation, HP Device Manager opens. When I try to 'add printer' in HP Printer Selector, or Mac Printer Setup Utility, there is no HP connection other than HP IP, and no printer to select.
