Hi,
Are you using the original CD or the latest software from the web?
Additionally, what is your Mac OS X version?
You may find it by clicking the Apple icon and then About This Mac.

thsnk you so much for the reply... I am using the latest mac software osX Lion 10.7.3
when i first tried to install I got a warning that the firmware was going to be replaced with older firmware from the web.. There was no option but to go on....
So now, as I get close to the end of the install process, it tells me I am not an administrotor, so i can't finish the install and thus i cannot run the HP manager software. the firmware version is 20100427

Hi again,
You are gladly welcome.
As mentioned above, have you used the original CD to install the printer?
Based on the problem description I believe it may be the reason, as the software version provided by the original CD is not compatible with Lion.
If you used the CD indeed, make sure to terminate any exisiting installation screen by Closing the HP Installer.
Enter Applications > HP Laserjet Software and follow the HP Uninstaller.
If there is no HP Folder exists, skip the step above.
Next, repair the disc permissions to avoid any possible conflict:
1. Open the the Applications folder.
2. Go to the Utilities folder.
3. Double-click on Disk Utility.
4. Select the hard drive containing the boot volume.
5. Go to the First Aid tab and select Repair Disk Permissions.
Note: This process may take several minutes depending on the Mac and amount of permissions that need to be repaired. The Progress Log will indicate when the proccess has been completed.
Finally, download and install the latest software which is compatible with Lion:

Please let me know of any problem,
Shlomi

Hi Shlomi
Thank you so so so much... The new software fixed that problem! I have now got access to HP manager and can run the printer from my Mac. my next challenge is to network the thing...
Do i unplug the USB cale and plug in an ethernet? also, it does not seem to recognise my wireless network. I would liek to be able tio print from my iPad to the printer as well. is all that possible?
thanks again
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
You are gladly welcome.
Great to know you managed to solve the installation problem.
In order to connect the printer using Ethernet, plug the ethernet cable first.
Enter System Preferences > Print & Scan and remove the existing print queue.
From the HP Laserjet folder, follow the HP Setup Assistant by selecting Nettwork.
If you preffer to connect the printer wirelessly, keep the USB plugged and follow the steps below:
- In Finder , click Applications , and then double-click System Preferences .
- Click Print & Fax .
- Click Open Print Queue , and then click Printer Setup .
- Click the Utility tab, and then click Open Printer Utility .
- Click the EWS Browser tab, and then click EWS Browser .
- Click the Networking tab, and then click Wireless from the list on the left.
- Enable the wireless radio by clicking the Enable check box.
- Under Communication Mode , click Join an existing wireless network , select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list, and then click the desired network name.
- From the Security Mode pop-up menu under Authentication , click WEP or WPA/WPA2 . Your selection depends on which Wireless Security Protocol your network uses.

NOTE:If your network does not have Wireless Security, leave the Security Mode set to Open System (No Authentication) . - Type your WEP/WPA/WPA2 key in the appropriate field, and then click Apply .
- In the confirmation box, click OK , and then close the HTML Config and Print Queue windows.
- In the Print & Fax window, click your HP product from the list of printers, and then click the Minus sign
to remove it from the list.

NOTE:This action removes the USB Connection from the list so that the only entry for your HP product is the Wireless Connection. - Disconnect the USB cable from the product and the computer.
- Under Applications , click the HP LaserJet Professional M1210 MFP Series folder.
- Click HP Setup Assistant , and then click Continue .
- Click Network , click HP LaserJet Professional M1217nfw MFP , and then click Continue .
- Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the product.
Once the printer connected to the same network as your iPad, you will be able to print using Airprint:
Airprint require the latest firmware. If you did not updated the firmware during the installation, make sure to run the HP Firware Updater under the HP Folder.
Regards,
Shlomi

Dear Shlomi
I simply cannot thank you enough! The printer is now working beautifully with my Mac - i have re-installed the usb connection as it wasn't initally responding to the HP manager - but now it is. it is also working wirelessly; i can print from both my wife's and from my own iPad. I am really proud of myself as i managed to get my Samsung netbook printing to it as well! This was a bit harder - but I managed it!
Thank you so so so much for your prompt, freindly and very effective help.
with my warmest regards
Jonathan

Hi jonathan,
As much as I know, the software compatible with Apple Mail only,
I will try testing it to figure for any possibility, although I doubt if that is possible.
Will keep you posted,
Shlomi
