Driver for HP Photosmart 3210 won't install on Windows 7

I am no longer able to install the printer driver for an HP 3210 photosmart printer.

The printer was working fine until one day it disappeared.   When the USB cable is removed and then re-attched, windows detects the printer and attempts to install the driver.  A few minutes later I get a pop up in the lower corner that the driver failed to install!  I have tried everything,  removing the HP essentials ( reboot ),  re-install,  same result.  I used HP printer diagnostics, no dice.   What is going on here!   Windows update recently installed IE 9.  To the best of my knowledge, nothing else has been added.   Is the driver for this older printer obosolete?  Thanks.

 

I am running Windows 7 64 bit.
