FAX setup: "Error - Failure to get Default Settings" [ Edited ]

I just installed an MFP M1212nf. When I try to run set up FAX I received the error message "Error - Failure to get Default Settings". The program quits after displaying the message box. I did a search search for the phrase and came up with nothing. I also did a search in these forums and also had no hits.

The titlebar of the message box is "FaxConfig"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I spent 3 hours on the phone with tech support and at the end of a grueling session of tests learned that the message in question is not documented.

I guess what is needed at this point is input from one of the software staff to find out what the message means and add it to the documentation since the message is observed in the field.

I downloaded and ran the HP Home Network diagnostic utility. It recommended that I shut down the firewall for the test. I did.

Then I tried the connection and the program suggests that the "Network communication is OK. No firewall issues were found."

I do get problems reported with the firewall on.

The weird thing is that when I click on the "Done with Firewalls" button I get the following message.

"There is still a communications problem"

The program eventually hung and I canceled it.

I just brought in a laptop running Win7.

I was able to get the laptop next to the printer.

I installed the HP software.

I get the same message when I tried to run the FAX code.

Is there anyone from HP reading these threads?

Just discovered a problem trying to get documents printed with another printer in the network. I can't. Since the only software I have been playing with is the HP drivers, it seems that the Xerox Phaser installation was overwritten or otherwise damaged by the HP printer installation.

Fortunately the Xerox code installs in a fraction of the time the HP does and it works which has never happened with the HP software.

I tried the online chat. That did not work. What galled me was that the advice from support was to abandon using the ethernet and use a USB instead. This sort of advice is really bad advice. It tells people not to believe the marketing of HP. It says that HP's techincal specs are unreliable and cannot be trusted. I switched to telephone support and was given very different advice and very different tests to run. The matter was quickly resolved. It seems that there was a problem with the unit I was shipped. Not a big deal. The problem was quickly identified. A resolution was worked out. I was up and running quickly.
