Been doing some more testing myself, I agree it is definitely the 64-bit driver in Windows 7.
What's interesting is I have it working on Win2003 Server x64, so that 64-bit driver was fine.
Trying XP64 next. Doing it all in VMware Server, with USB pass-through to the guest OS.
I'm too cheap to buy a new printer and I don't do much printing these days, so I may just end up printing all of my docs from Windows 7 to XPS or PDF format and save it on my home NAS, then go to a WinXP VM and physically print it from there.

The just bought a new Computer with Windows 7 64 bit. The printer will not respond at all. It works fine on my older computer using Windows 7 32 bit. I've confirmed that after installing a 64 bit Windows 7 on my older computer using a spare hard drive. It won't work either. So it's the 64 bit O/S. I don't think there is a fix for this. I use a print server connected to my router and use my printer wirelessly.

This is a late response...but I agree that there is something wrong with the Windows 7 64-bit drivers for this printer. Does HP plan to do anything about this? It would be nice to see some working updated drivers for this printer.

I found a "workaround" (if you can call it that) posted on a MS forum. It does seem to work for me. It's certainly not something that the average user is going to be able to do.
I'm using VMware Server running on a Win2K3R2 64-bit server. It supports USB pass-through now to the guest OS. I would assume the latest version of VMware Workstation and perhaps MS Virtual PC also support this.
To get it working on my Vista machine, I had to setup a Win2k3 Server 32-bit virtual server. I then attached the printer to that virtual machine via USB pass-through, and shared it out. Then in the sharing properties, I had to install the additional driver for x64 bit. I put in a disk for Win2k3 64-bit and Windows installed the x64 driver. Then, I was able to connect to the printer from my Windows 7 machine and it installed and is working.
What seems strange to me is it did not work on Windows 7 as a remote network printer when it was attached directly to my physical Win2k3R2 64-bit box. It only worked attached to the 32-bit server, shared out with the additional x64 driver installed.
Also found a lot of complaints about this printer not working in Vista 64-bit, which I confirmed by installing a Vista x64 virtual machine and attaching the printer to it. Considering the problem has existed for so long, I highly doubt a fix is coming.
I guess I can't complain about having a printer that lasted for 11 years, but it's still frustrating considering it's in perfectly good condition.

I don't know about Vista, but I have a 720c which works perfectly well under Win XP Pro 64bit, but when running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit on the same PC (dual boot), does not.
The only difference I can see is the driver - - it installs, detects the printer, but will it print? - not likely!

This appears to be correct. While the Deskjet 710/720/810/820/1000 will work with the supported drivers in Windows 7 32 bit the spooler crashes in Windows 7 64 bit. I do not know of any workaround.

Same problem here!
It seems. that the driver is not working in general under Windows 7 x64.
Please see this topic here and the links at the bottom:
The only workaround I currently see is the use of a print server or another computer that prints an intermediate format (e.g. PDF)

I like the idea at the bottom of that page - let's all hit this link and click the "thumbs-down" button to report the page is not accurate, and then click the link to "report a compatbility" issue. It's a long shot, but it seems like our best and only shot at ever getting this fixed.

There is another thread going related to print failures with XP, Vista & Win 7. I just posted a fix for my PSC 1510 which may help you.
