HP B9180 WHITE LINES / BANDING APPEARS ON PRINTS

Hi-

I own an HP B9180 printer and I have noticed white lines or banding appear on the last 1/4 of my prints.  I ran the clean print heads, printer alignment  and other processes without any improvement.  I also manually cleaned the printer heads using distilled water several times, but I still get the white streaks across the print.  I have also replaced multiple printer heads.  What suggestions do you have to fix this problem?

Thanks

Mark

Re: HP B9180 WHITE LINES / BANDING APPEARS ON PRINTS

Hello markop.

Please, follow these steps and let us know the results. If the problem is not resolved at the end, then please print and scan the Diagnostic Report, the NEDD report and attach it to the thread so that we can see how it looks like.

It is very recommended to keep this printer turned on all the time, which means 24 hours a day. This allows the printer to perform routinary printhead servicing and maintenance to keep optimal print quality.

Locate and clean the New Electrostatic Drop Detector (NEDD)

The NEDD monitors the printhead nozzles. If the NEDD is dirty, the printer might spray ink into the sensor when attempting to clean the printheads. Follow these instructions to clean the NEDD manually.
Step one: Locate the NEDD
  1. Make sure the product is turned on, then lift the lid.
  2. Press and hold the On button until the print carriage moves to the left.
  3. Locate the four spit and wipe sponges on the inside, right side of the product.
Figure 1: Spit and wipe sponges and clean NEDD
The NEDD is a 25.4 mm (1 inch) slot located to the left of the spit and wipe sponges. If the NEDD is dirty, the top is probably black, and the slot might be difficult to see.
Figure 2: Spit and wipe sponges and dirty NEDD
Step two: Clean the NEDD
  1. Gather a clean, lint-free cloth and a small amount of distilled or bottled water.
NOTE:Do not use abrasive substances or household cleaners to clean the NEDD. These substances can damage the product.
  2. Moisten the cloth with the water so that the cloth is damp but not dripping, then wipe the NEDD with the cloth until all the ink is removed and the NEDD is shiny.
  3. Make sure there is no debris on or around the NEDD, then close the lid.
Step three: Print a NEDD test page
  1. Make sure the product is turned on, then load a sheet of plain, unused, white paper in the input tray.
  2. Press and hold the On button.
  3. While holding the On button, press the OK button 4 times, then press the Cancel button 9 times. The message TAP TEST NO = 94 appears on the control panel display.
  4. Release the On button. The NEDD test page prints.
    Figure 3: NEDD test page
    1 - Functional value
  5. On the NEDD test page, make sure that the Functional value, listed under NEDD INFORMATION , is Good . If the value is BAD or FIBER , repeat Step two: Clean the NEDD

Hope the issue is resolved at this point, but if it's not, then maybe you need to remove the printheads once more and clean the electrical contacts located in the printer carriage and the electrical contacts on the printheads too.

Cheers.

Re: HP B9180 WHITE LINES / BANDING APPEARS ON PRINTS

Thanks for your reply.  I have tried to clean the NEDD and was succcessful in removing a lot of the gunk accumulated; however, a black stain remains in some areas, which I cannot remove.  I have also been unsuccessful in running a close loop operation.  What other suggestions do you have?

Re: HP B9180 WHITE LINES / BANDING APPEARS ON PRINTS

One more piece of information, when I cleaned the NEDD several times, I could not get a "Good" response.  Every time I tried cleaning the part, the response was "Fiber".

Re: HP B9180 WHITE LINES / BANDING APPEARS ON PRINTS

Hello markop. I'm afraid I don't have further suggestions to resolve this issue. If you still receive the Fiber for the NEDD status, then I can only suggest to try cleaning several times more or replace the unit. NEDD sensor is not a replaceable part. Cheers.

Re: HP B9180 WHITE LINES / BANDING APPEARS ON PRINTS

I am very disappointed in your advice.  As a corporate customer, an EPP customer and a shareholder in your company, I expected an "expert" suggestion on how to fix my printer's issue.  I cannot understand how 80 percent of the photograph prints out fine and 20 percent does not.  I have done my due diligence in following all of the documented instructions and the best you can offer is to replace my unit.  That is a very sad recommendation coming from you and if that's all you can provide me with as a solution, you can be sure I will never purchase another HP product in my lifetime.
