HP Photosmart C4580 All-In-One printer Scanner Copier

Windows XP

Device Update Wizard

 "Device Not Connected" 

"The device you are trying to update is not currently connected or turned on"

"Click refresh after connecting your device"

 

One day the printer stopped responding.

Nothing happened to it and it has been used very little.

I downloaded the latest driver and installed it. (computer rebooted)

Then I tried to install this update - I get the above responses - so I am unable to install the update.

The weird thing is - I can print to the printer -  and yet it still states in the update popup it is not connected.

How can I install this update?

I want to use the scanner and I am unable to

 

(when computer stopped responding it was connected wirelessly - i assumed it had an issue because I changed the router password.  Currently I have the machine attached to the computer via USB cable and no wireless is set up)
