I bought an HP Photosmart C4580 yesterday but can't install it. I have Vista which I believe maybe causing the problem having googled the issue. When I try to install from the cd, it gets to stage 3 of 4 and then comes up with a fatal error message regarding MSI.netdevicemanager01. It prompts me to go to the HP website for a solution but there isn't one.
Yesterday I spent 3hrs online with an HP support person who instructed me to do a variety of things which didn't work. He also got me to download the installation software online which I have done but now I still have a fatal error but this time it states it is to do with MSI.uploadsupport or something. The last word from the technical support man was that I should restart my computer in safe mode as he claimed there was probably some program on my pc preventing the installation. I tried this but it would not work due to the printer spooler stopping which couldn't be started in safe mode. After about 5hrs in total, I gave up. Today I have abandoned the traditional installation and have managed to install the driver simply by plugging the printer usb into my laptop. I am triumphant because now I can print things but still in a state of despair as I do not know how to set up the wireless thing and also the scanner doesn't appear to work.
Can anyone offer any pearls of wisdom as it's starting to drive me nuts.
Thanks in advance!

If you have the software disk you can try the below steps
1. Insert the CD.
2. Browse to the location X:\UTIL\CCC\ where X stands for CD drive and double click on the below files one by one to uninstall the software.
3. Restart the computer.
4 Delete the Digital Imaging folder (If present):
The path to the above mentioned folder is given below:
C:\Program Files(X86)\HP or Hewlett Packard\Digital Imaging folder.
Just right click on the folder and select Delete.
After trying the above steps yon need to temporarily disable the firewall(Both windows and the third party anti viru software).
Try installing the latest version of the windows installer from the below microsoft weblink,
After installing this, you need to download the lates anf FULL FEATURE VERSION of the printer software that is compatible with the Vista operating system.
And then try installing the software using that.
Please let me knwo if the steps work, if they don't work then please get back to me with the exact error message you are getting

Thanks for this, this was the solution HP got back to me with after I emailed them. I have followed everything correctly with no issues but still have the same result as before with the fatal error message 'MSI.netdevicemanager01'
any other ideas?

Did you finally install your printer ? I've bought mine a year ago, re install a million times the program, asked HP and tried all processes, and even change the printer.
I guess the problem is due to vista but I think theme must be a solution ....
I'm really upset.
Many thanks for any help
