HP Deskjet 990cxi won't work, no driver found for Windows 7 (64 bit)

I’m not able to get my HP Deskjet 990cxi printer working, it seems the only way to get a driver for it is through windows update, however when I try to install it Windows Update installs a USB print driver but is unable to find a matching device driver for the printer (which I believe is necessary, but I’m not sure). This results in a printer configuration that won't work due to a missing driver. The HP support site indicates there in no downloadable driver available and that it can be obtained through Window Update, which I have not had any luck with. The only disk I have for the printer is one from Window 98/WinNT 4.0 era and nothing on it is compatible with Win7 64 bit OS. I have gotten the printer to work with the HP F735 and HP 9800 drivers (manual installation), however they don’t work well for complex graphic printing for many applications and text printing is not as crisp as I like it. Any ideas, other that get another printer?

Hi bkarelg,

I have tested the HP Deskjet 990c driver on my Win 7 64-Bit machine, and it installs correctly. Have you tried installing it on another computer running Win 7 64-Bit?

I am trying to add my printer to the new windows 7 OS.  I find the driver in Windows update and it goes to install.  After about 15 seconds a pop up windows shows up and says "Printer driver not installed.  Access denied".  Any idea of how to resolve this?  It's a home machine and my account has administrator access.  Thanks!

Hi rknight294596,

Are you using a Parrellel to USB converter?

Try on a different computer to check to see if the hardware is working correctly?

Re: HP Deskjet 990cxi won't work, no driver found for Windows 7 (64 bit)

USB to USB connection.  Printer worked fine before I had to replace the hard drive and upgrade to Windows 7.  the device shows correctly under Manage, Manage Devices, Other Devices although there is a ? by it.  No HP products under Programs.  However, when I download the driver it does so and automatically starts the install.  The access denied error the device is installed incorrectly, but I can't seem to uninstall it to get the driver to load.  there is no driver on my machine when i do a search versus the on-line search.  Thanks for your assistance.

Re: HP Deskjet 990cxi won't work, no driver found for Windows 7 (64 bit)

Hi rknight294596,

You wouldn't have any program listed under Programs as this is only a NOS driver from within the operating system. There is no full feature software and driver available for this printer from HP. If you are getting access denied when attempting to install the NOS driver you will need to contact Microsoft about the issue as it is related to the Win 7 operating system on your computer. Follow the steps below to install the 990c driver instead if the 990cxi driver.

1. Open devices and printer

2. Click Add a printer

3. Click Add a local printer

4. From the Use existing port select the USB option, and then click next

5. Click on the Windows Update button to get all support window 7 drivers updated

6. Once update is finished. Click on HP from left menu, and then select the Deskjet 990c from the right menu, and then click next.

7. Follow the remaining instructions to complete the installation.

Once you have the 990c printer added make sure it is the default printer, and then try printing to your Deskjet 3050 printer using this driver. Let me know if you have the same issue?
