HP F2280 All In One (Help!) (1797 Views)

Okay, I'm tearing my friggin hair out here. Printer and everything installed no problem on Vista on my laptop, tried installing it on 2000 on my Desktop and it says the file usb.inf is either missing or not up-to date, so it wont install the printer. I've tried EVERYTHING i can think of, to no avail. First i downloaded a replacement usb.inf file from the internet, but i cant put it in its place because whenever i try to do anything (delete, rename, move) the original usb.inf file it wont let me (maybe why the installation has a problem with it in the first place), coming up with an 'Error Performing Inpage Operation' message. The installation doesnt ask me to specify a location of the file, so it searches for it in the same place every time, hence not being able to replace it is such an issue. So next I thought i'd try plugging the printer in and installing the drivers for that manually (in the instructions it says to install the software before you plug in the printer), but it couldnt find a driver to use. SO, i downloaded the correct drivers off the net (came in a file which looks as if its the same as whats on the disk), and noticing it contained a usb.inf file i tried running the setup from the downloaded file rather than the disk, hoping it would look in that file rather than the usual one to find usb.inf. But no, it looked in the same place and so failed again for the same reason. So i installed the drivers for the printer from the files i downloaded, but it said the installation failed as the printer name was incorrect (or invalid or something along those lines), but didnt give me an option to call it anything different. Then i tried to add a printer through the control panel, and it couldnt find one since its plug and play. So yeh, im tearing my hair out of my skull, can anyone help? (with the installation troubles, not the tearing out of my hair).
