HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

After upgrading my PC from Windows XP 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit my HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One printer no longer prints double-sided automatically.  When sending something to print I am presented with only two options: Print One-Sided or Manually Print on Both Sides.  If I choose the latter I have to manually reload the paper when prompted.  I have tried searching for updates and downloading drivers but nothing  has resolved the problem.  I've even gone into printer properties printing shortcuts and changed the settings in "Print on Both Sides" to 'automatically' and still I am prompted to reload the paper.  It is a real pain when I have to print a very large slide pack especially when the printer decides to pick up two sheets at the same time.  I have spoken to HP and they say my printer is old and they cannot help me.  It is about 8-10 years old.  Any advice would be gratefully received.

Re: HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

Hello Toosweet

In Printer Preferences make sure the duplexer is enabled. Do you have the full feature software installed?

Re: HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

Hi Travis

I really do appreciate your help.  I have looked in Printer Preferences.  In the Printing Shortcuts tab, in "What do you want to do?" I have selected 'General Everyday Printing'. Below that in the 'Print on both sides' drop down menu I have selected 'Automatically'. But when you look at the "Finishing" tab and the 'Document Options' the option it gives is a check box which says 'Print on Both Sides (Manually)' .  I printed a 2 page test document and before printing I clicked on [File], [Print], then clicked on the 'Print  One Sided' drop down menu and the only other option is 'Manually Print on Both Sides - Reload paper when prompted to print the second side'.  Even if I go to Printer Properties and in Printer Shortcuts I choose Two sided (dubplex) printing, print on both sides automatically and click OK, when I am taken back to the [File], [Print] view I am still only presented with two options....to print one sided or to manually print on both sides - reloading paper when prompted to print second side.

In Device and Printers, when I look at Printer Properties, in Device Settings, I can see  the words HP Officejet 7400 series device settings. Underneath that is Form to Tray Assignment.  Everything listed underneath there is greyed out but I can see that the upper and lower trays are showing A4 paper which is correct.  Everything listed under Installable Options are also greyed out but it says Duplex Unit (for 2-sided printing): Not installed. Rear Tray: Not installed. Allow Manual Duplexing: Enabled. Activate the Hardware Auto-off Feature: Yes.  My printer does have a Duplex Unit for 2-sided printing.  I have already tried uninstalling the printer and then reinstalling the drivers from the HP website so am baffled as to what to try next.

Re: HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

Hello Toosweet

The setting should be under Printer Properties not Preferences. Under "Device Settings". You mention it is grayed out but are you able to change it from Not installed to Installed? Have you tried to remove the Duplexing unit and re-install it?

Re: HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

I have the same problem. When I first intalled the printer with Windows XP, by activating somewhere the duplex unit,  I could print automatically. Now with Window 7, no where in the set up process I can find the option to activate automatic duplex printing. Further, my printer, a c7250 has never been able to use the feeder. At the second page it gives the message "paper jam" without any paper in the printer rollers. This is a sofware problem that HP has not cared to address and will only suggest to turn of and on the printer. I have not even bothered to call HP.

Re: HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

Hello arielrod

Does the option for the duplexer appear as per the instructions in my previous post? What happens when you select the duplex option while printing? Do you have the Full Feature Software installed?

As for the paper jam, the following article covers both real and false paper jams.

Re: HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

Thank you. As to the activation of the duplex unit I was able to do automatic duplexing following the diagram. However the problem of the "paper jam" has been persistent throughout. I have several times followed the instructions in the video. In every occasion that I try to use the feeder, only one page will go thru before the "original jam" message shows. Note that this message is not about a paper jam. It is about a feeder jam. This even happens if I try to fax, at which instance there is no paper feeding from the tray to cause a real jam in the rollers. I think it is a sofware bug.

Re: HP Officejet 7410 All-in-One no longer 'automatically' print double sided

Hello arielrod

Based on your description the problem is your automatic document feeder (ADF) continually gives you the "original jam" message. This can usually be caused by dirty components that are part of the ADF. The following document:

1. Provides instructions for cleaning the ADF

2. A reset code for a partial reset

Paper Path Issues in the Automatic Document Feeder

Please let me know what happens.
