I just installed a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One Printer (CN577A) and networked it for my 2 computers. The whole network is wired and connects a Mac, a Windows XP machine and this printer. The Mac works fine and has no issues. Unfortunately, the Windows machine is not working consistently.
When I installed the printer, everything worked for the day. The next day when I went to print, the print job got stuck in the queue and I had to clear the queue and reboot the machine. Then the printer worked. The next day it happened again and happens consistently everytime the system sits for a long period of time (around 6 or more hours). Each time I can get it to work by clearing the queue and rebooting the machine.
To try to solve the problem I have uninstalled the print driver software and reinstall, but nothing has changed. It worked for the day and now it is doing it again.
Any suggestions?

Is the 8600 connected directly to a wall power socket?
What SP is installed in the XP computer?
Make sure you have the latest firmware installed on the 8600.
Have you run the HP network utility when this problem occurs?

Is the 8600 connected directly to a wall power socket?
Yes
What SP is installed in the XP computer?
SP3
Make sure you have the latest firmware installed on the 8600.
I believe so. When I ran the Check for Updates, it told me I was up to date.
Have you run the HP network utility when this problem occurs?
I have run HPPDU when the problem occurs.
It sees the printer and says it is connected.
I get all green check marks, but it gives an error when I try to print a test page.
I haven't run HPHNDU when the problem occurs, but I ran it after a reboot (when it was working) and it said everything is fine.

You mentioned a error when trying to print a test page, what does the error message say?
Are you using the 8600's "Sleep Mode" feature? If yes try turning it off.

I don't get an error when I try to print. It just gets stuck in the queue.
I do get an error when I run the diagnotics.
After getting all green checks, when I print the test page I get an error saying it can't communicate with the printer.
This could be because a print job is stuck in the queue.
How do you turn off the sleep mode?
I didn't turn it on, but if it is on by default, then it is on.

Does the status of the 8600 say offline when you get the can't communicate message?
Touch the eco button on the 8600 control panel then Sleep, check option.

No, it is not off line
I will check the eco button when I get near the printer.
right now all I can do is access the web control panel remotely. (I'm at work)

Can you check if you can access the 8600 using it's IP address and your browser when you get the error?
