HP Solution Center configuration

I have installed the HP Solution Center application for use with the network attached OfficeJet Pro 7780.  I also have a network attached LaserJet 2605DN. There are three tabs which were automatically configured during the install at the top of tthe HP Solution Center application.  One tab corresponds with the "OfficeJet 7780", another corresponds with the LaserJet 2605DN, and a third says "$FriendlyName$" - which has also has an association to the LJ2605DN.

How do I eliminate the third "$FriendlyName$" tab?  You can't simply delete it, and I've found no configurable setting for getting rid of it.

How do I get rid of this?  Thanks in advance.

Re: HP Solution Center configuration

Is anyone familiar with configuration of the "HP Solution Center" software that get instaslled with the HP 7700 series AIO printers?  If so, how do you manually delete one of the printer "tabs" that gets generated erroneously when the software installs and looks at the other devices in the networked environment?

Thanks in advance!

Re: HP Solution Center configuration

Does anyone from HP monitor or moderate this forum.  It seems I may need to direct my question to someone familiar with the HP Solution Center application supplied with the 77xx AOI printers.  It should be a relatively simple question for some that supports or develops the application for HP.

Thaks Bob.  I'm curious to know what your title means: "MS MVP Printing/Imaging" ?  Do you work for Microsoft?

Re: HP Solution Center configuration

No, I do not work for Microsoft.  The Microsoft MVP program is a program that recognizes online contributors in various technical fields.  There are about a dozen awardees in the Printing and Imaging area.  You can see more details of the  MVP program here and/or see my profile here.

Re: HP Solution Center configuration

Nice idea, Bob Headrick,  about contacting HP Tech Support via email;    except ..........  it doesn't work!

at least it has not solved anything for me regarding my non-functioning HP Solution Center for my PhotoSmart 8180  during the four months that I've been corresponding with them.

Why can't I find anything HERE (on this user forum) about getting my HP Solution Center to work?
(the only thing I find is suggestions to uninstall and reinstall the software, and I have done that about a dozen times, in all different methods suggested in HP help and the forum: Uninstall_L3,  Uninstall_L4, from Control Panel, Uninstall button on the software disk, and MS windows install cleanup utility.)
yes, I am connected directly, via USB.
yes, all the latest updates are installed.
I have XP Pro, uptodate,  and everything else works fine.
my printer copies and prints fine, btw;   only the scanning & Solution Center don't work.
I have contacted HP support via email and all they keep suggesting is uninstall/reinstall.  I think ten or more hours have been spent doing just that.  Twenty emails back 'n' forth with them, so far.
any reason why the support forum doesn't have any suggestions?   surely someone has had this problem before;
thanks,
Rick Schmidt

Re: HP Solution Center configuration

Rick, I don't profess to be an expert for the solution center application by any strech, but are you encountering any errors when you uninstall and reinstall the app?  It seems to be a collection of modules and applications which control the various functions of the AIO printers.  I encountered many issues installing, uninstalling, and re-installing earlier revisions of version 8 of this software under Vista 32 for a L7780 AIO printer.  They couldn't get the code to completely uninstall, and consequently would error upon reinstall.

I was even lucky? enough to have an HP tech spend 3 1/2 hrs., and do a remote takeover of my machine to help uninstall the complete app, to no avail. He found files in areas I never would have suspected!  Consequently, his only suggestion was to reinstall the OS- which I thought was just nuts. I told him before I do that to please escalate to a higher level support group- which he said he would and gave me a case number.  I never heard anything back at all.

If you do encounter any errors on reinstall, I would rocommend using a good registry cleaner, and doing a search for anything "hp", and selectively deleting. I also recommend doing a file directory search and delete also.  This seems to help get the OS back to a "clean" state prior to a reinstall of their latest version software.  Good luck!

I have used HP printer products for over 20 years and never encountered near the level of problems I have with this.  I suspect the quality of their printer software applications and testing has certainly suffered because of the number of layoffs and reshuffling they've had in recent years.

Cheers, Mark

Re: HP Solution Center configuration

Thanks, Mark.

good suggestions, all of them.   and at least I know I'm not the only one to be having horrendous problems with the software.

I guess I'm wondering: how many times do I do a complete cleanup & uninstall/reinstall,   before calling it quits?     honestly, I think I've done this close to ten times,  with the last two times going completely smoothly (no error messages) from beginning to end.      I think that's because I finally figured out how to do complete & utter cleanup of the majority of junk left behind from the previous reinstalls.

It takes a long time to do this,  as you know Mark.

So I was somewhat relieved the last two occasions,  when it all seemed to go smoothly:  no errors,  all the icons & headings in place when completed,  seemingly all the way it should be.    and everything (like Essentials 3.5 and Digital Imaging Monitor and printing functions)   it all worked just fine.     Then I plug in the 8180 printer and try Solution Center:    "No HP devices detected".

Thanks for the "encouragement" (???),  Mark.     However, I draw the line at reinstalling the OS:  my OS is working just fine with the other 70 or so programs on my computer.

(OS is XP Pro SP2 by the way)

Rick

Re: HP Solution Center configuration

Did any of you all find a solution?  I've never had a problem with my 2605dn until I recently purchased a new HP notebook.  It's 64bit with Vista.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled but can't seem to get the printer right.  I can print but I can't toggle the print properties to duplex.  Am I doing something wrong?
