HP Solution Center doesn't let me choose filename for scans

[ Edited ]

All I want is to be able to select a file name and save location per scan using HPSC.  (through computer or printer interface)

Instead, HPCS just dumps files with the name prefix and number sequence appended, as configured in the scan to pic or scan to doc shortcut settings.  The shortcut settings have a checkbox for "Prompt for settings at the time of scan", in the same dialog box as the save location and file prefix, but HPCS never honors that configuration.

So I can scan ok so long as I never wish to specify the file name or destination location for the resulting file.  What am I missing?

Hello jeremyenos

What operating system are you using and what is your printer model number?

Re: HP Solution Center doesn't let me choose filename for scans

Using Win7 x64 and a C5180.

Also, is there a place to submit this bug directly to HP or is the user forum the only support?

thanks-

Jeremy

Hi jeremyenos,

To scan a picture or document, follow these steps:

Step one: Load the item to scan
You can scan from the scanner glass or from the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) tray, if your product has one.
  1. Make sure that the product is connected to the computer.
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Load the picture or document:

  4. Scanner glass : Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.
  5. ADF : Place the item into the document feeder tray. The printed side faces up and the top edge goes into the tray first. Adjust the width guides to fit the item.
CAUTION:Do not load photos in the ADF. Use the scanner glass instead to prevent damage to photos.
Step two: Scan the item
  1. Open HP Solution Center with one of the following methods:

  2. Click the Windows icon ( ) , click All Programs , click the HP folder, and then click HP Solution Center.
  3. Double-click the HP Solution Center icon on your desktop.
  4. If you have more than one HP device installed, click the printer icon on the left for the printer that you are using to scan.
  5. Use one of the following methods to start the scan:
For photos or artwork:Click the on-screen Scan Picture "button" in HP Solution Center.
For a text document with or without graphics:Click the on-screen Scan Document "button" in HP Solution Center.
A "Scanning from..." screen displays to prompt for scan settings.
If this settings screen does not display before the scan starts, a preference was set to bypass the prompt. To adjust settings, follow these steps to turn the prompt back on:
    1. Cancel the scan, return to the home screen of HP Solution Center, and then click the Settings option.
    2. Click Scan Settings , then click the appropriate option from the popup menu: Scan Picture Settings or Scan Document Settings .
    3. Select the check box, Prompt for settings at the time of scan , and then click OK .
    4. Click Home , and then start the scan again.
  6. On the "Scanning from..." screen, click the appropriate option under "Scan Shortcuts" on the left. Each shortcut has a default group of settings that display when you click it.
  7. Click Change Settings , and then read through the drop-down menu choices for all of the settings for the shortcut, adjusting any settings as necessary. Also click the Advanced Picture Settings button and the Save to file Save Options button to view your choices and make any changes.
Important : HP Solution Center versions and options vary, depending on your printer. For specific instructions on all the settings the software offers, click the Help button on the home screen or settings screens in HP Solution Center.
  8. Click Scan .
The preview screen might display, if you selected the option to show a preview. Use the options on the preview screen to make any desired adjustments before you finish the scan.
After the scan completes, it goes to the destination that you specified in the settings.

Re: HP Solution Center doesn't let me choose filename for scans

So I had seen that manual page... I did mention in my original post that I did check the box to "prompt for settings at time of scan".  This is what it doesn't do, and why I think there is a bug.

Re: HP Solution Center doesn't let me choose filename for scans

Hi jeremyenos,

Does this happen on more than one computer?

Install the printer on a different computer, and let me know if you have the same issue?
