Hi-
First post, thanks for having me. This is an easy one:
Co-worker set up a system password for the front panel on the m1536dnf and never wrote it down. Genius. Anyway, nobody can access any front panel settings any longer.
Despite my user guide ninjitsu, I cannot seem to locate the cold reset procedure in the manual. If anyone knows what it is, that would be swell.

The only online instructions I can seem to find involve holding down the "Go" button on older models -- no "Go" button on this guy. I see an "OK" button, and a variety of others....

HI HPin718,
What problems are you having with the printer that you want to do a reset?
Follow the instructions below to reset printer
1. Turn off printer
2. Remove power cable from printer and outlet
3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
4. Plug the power cable directly into the wall outlet, and then plug it into the printer
5. Press the power button to turn unit back on

Hi. Thanks for the reply!
I just tested your reset procedure and unfortunately this doesn't work -- the machine is still password-protected.
To clarify, our network configuration has changed and we need to modify the printer's settings. However the user who configured the machine for security no longer remembers the password. It appears that we would need this to modify any of the system or network settings. The machine is basically dead in the water right now.
Does the reset procedure you outlined erase the security settings? How else can I do this? Again, our printer model is M1536dnf.

The password you are talking about is to access the EWS - Embedded Web Server of the printer correct?

On page 183 of the manual there's this passage under "Product Security" (see below). They're calling it the "system password". It's not clear to me if this is the same password you'd use to get into the EWS because I didn't set up the printer initially. But it may be.

Product security features
The product includes a password feature that restricts access to setup features while allowing basic functions to continue. The password can be set from the EWS or the control panel.
Private receive can be used to store faxes on the product until you are at the product to print them.
Assign a system password through the product control panel 1.On the control panel, press the Setupbutton. 2.Use the arrow buttons to select the System Setup menu, and then press the OK button. 3.Use the arrow buttons to select the Product Security item, and then press the OK button. 4.Use the arrow buttons to select the On option, and then press the OK button. 5.Use the keypad to type a password, and then press the OK button.
Assign a system password through the EWS
Assign a password for the product so that unauthorized users cannot change the product settings.

Open the HP Embedded Web Server by entering the product IP address into the address line of a Web browser.
Click the Settings tab.
On the left side of the window, click the Security menu.
In the Device Security Settings area, click the Configure . . . button.
In the Device Password area, type the password in the New Password box, and type it again in the Verify password box.
Click the Apply button. Make note of the password and store it in a safe place.

Have you tried turning off the product security from the front panel of the printer?
Turn off the product security from the front panel:
- Press the setup button (Wrench icon)
- Select System Setup
- Select Product Security, and then change this to off

That's precisely the problem -- we can't enter the "System Setup" menu without the password. There must be some way of wiping this out with a cold reset type procedure.
