J4580 Print Cartridge Problem : [Tri-Color] Refer to Device Documentation

Okay, I'm beginning to feel like I knew better, buying another HP printer after dismal luck with two all-in-ones before.

My J4580 is already giving me headaches after only 6 or so months of use.

The device refuses to print, stating  "Print Cartridge Problem : [Tri-Color] Refer to Device Documentation to troubleshoot."  Nothing in the documentation helps.  The tri-color is still 90 percent full.  Sometimes pulling the tri-color out and putting it back in wil fool it into restarting.  When it restarts, it prints flawlessly.

I did try the ubiquitious "cleaning the contacts" and the other generic help instructions that I have seen but those were no help.  The "Solution Center (yeah, right)" pops up and all ithas is a link to buy more ink (!).

Anyone have a clue?  I'm about to throw this through the Office stores window, since I can't throw it thru HP's window.

Thanks!

so do you get this error message on the printer display or the computer? have you tried inserting your old cartridge and see what happens?

Yes ***as far as I can tell*** and I'm so sorry that I had forgotten to come back here.  I had a major system crash and I had to reinstall lots of drivers for my media player, GPS and printer(!).  Since that happened the device has not returned that error - knock on wood.

Re: J4580 Print Cartridge Problem : [Tri-Color] Refer to Device Documentation

Was looking for a solution to this very problem when lo and behold here it is and there are so many with the same problem!I truly cannot buy a new printer. What do I and all the others in the same boat supposed to do especially when money is an object?

I've tried all those corrective measures: cleaning contacs, old cartridges, but to no avail.

HELP!

Then it's better that you call HP and have them diagnose the printer.

Re: J4580 Print Cartridge Problem : [Tri-Color] Refer to Device Documentation

I am having this exact same problem with my J4550. I just bought it today. I havent even plugged it into the computer yet. It has to be a physical problem with the machine, and considering how many times I've had nothing but issues with HP problems, I'm not even going to try to fix it. I'm boxing it up, returning it to Costco tomorrow, and probably going to go support one of their competitors. HP has never, not once in my entire life, had a product that wasn't total junk. I will never recommend their junk to a friend, or a customer, or a family member. They obviously don't know how to run a business properly, considering when you're business involves any physical invention or creation, you check to make sure it works before sending it out for consumers to sell. So good ridance, HP. May you go bankrupt soon!
