I tried to install the HP's Full Driver Solution for my HP LaserJet CM1312nfi. About 200 times now.
The HP driver installation software does not recognize the USB connection between printer and computer.
It installs smoothly, up to the point where I have to connect the printer to the computer. So I connect the two.
I hear that the computer recognizes the USB (it makes a little bleep everytime I connect a USB).
I see in the task bar that Vista is "installing driver".
But HP's installation software stops, because it does not recognize the USB connection between printer and computer.
Vista is installing a printer driver indeed, but not the one I downloaded from the HP site. And because the HP Full Solution installation can't continue, the only option that remains is to "uninstall". Impossible to get HP driver software on my computer.
Vista informs about that: it says that if you are using a USB connection between printer and computer, you should not install any printer driver software, because the Vista software will do it automatically. And so it does. But only the Universal Printer Driver and not HP's Full Solution. Which means I can't scan from my computer and I can't scan from the HP to the computer (because the HP keeps "waiting for PC". I don't have HP ToolboxFX, etc.
Bottom line: how to I make the HP Full Solution Driver Software "see" the USB connection between computer and printer?

I should add that the Full Solution used to work (almost) fine on this computer. I had a minor issue while printing and scanning (which I now found out was probably a PCL XL error) and stupid enough I thought re-installing the software it might resolve this. In stead of resolving a minor issue, I now lost all functionality of the HP LaserJet CM1312nfi. Not to mention the two weekends I lost on searching the internet for solutions.

I am running Vista 32.
I spent half the weekend trying all kinds of possible solutions.
I started with the easy options:
- I put the printer closer to the computer (1 meter).
- In stead of plugging the HP USB cable into the USB hub connected to my computer, I pluggged the HP USB cable directly in my computer
- I replaced the USB cable by 2 different cables.
- Reset the printer to factory settings.
- Disconnected the power cable and USB cable and left the printer switched off for 24 hours.
Then I dug into Vista:
- I discovered a huge amount of USB ports and deleted all USB Universal Host Controllers and USB Host Hubs that I could not identify plus the hubs identifiable as Hewlett Packard.
- I checked the USB selective suspend setting (Control Panel –> Power Options –> Change plan settings –> Change advance power settings -> USB settings -> USB selective suspend setting -> Disabled)
When installation of the HP driver fails, the HP installation wizard pretends to uninstall. But it does not uninstall. I find bits and pieces of the HP software all across my computer system.
- No HP software identified under Control Panel -> Add or remove programs, so I can't "uninstall" HP software the easy way
BUT
in the root I see two HP programs installed:
C:\HP_CM1312_series_full_solution_v5.0_AM-EMEA\se
AND
C:\HP Universal Print Driver\pcl6-x32-5.3.1.10527\Drivers\Dot4
By the way: the latter only shows drivers for XP and Win2000, not for Vista
HP is also present in the path
C:\Windows\Hewlett-Packard\Setup Files\HP Software Update\{6EDE20CD-178C-4D5C-A9D1-9B356B2E4EDD}
Update Installer
and HP is present in the register:
C:\Windows -> regedit.exe -> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> All folders starting with HP are double, second version ends with .1
C:\Windows -> regedit.exe -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Hewlett Packard.
C:\Windows -> regedit.exe -> HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG -> Software -> Hewlett Packard.
I feel like cleaning the computer by deleting all folders and files referring to Hewlett Packard, in order to make a "fresh start", but I am not familiar enough with register work and I don't dare to delete files by trial and error, with the risk of a complete computer crash.
I would appreciate any suggestion...

While waiting for input from Auntie Em ;-) , I've tried other solutions I found on the HP site.
gr_uninst.exe
found on
I executed this program until level 4, no results.
I tried the solution found on
I typed "devmgmt.msc" in the Start search text box.
The HP printer model name does not appear, not in IEEE 1284.4 compatible printers, not in Universal Serial Bus Controllers, not in Other Devices.
I removed all the temp files
I typed "msconfig", disabled all Load Startup Services (except Microsoft Services), rebooted the computer, re-installed the HP driver. No result.
Again and again, during installation, at the point where I have to connect the printer to the computer, the HP installer freezes (step 3/4, 94% done). After connecting the printer to the computer, Vista recognizes the HP printer and installs the pre-installed drivers, which are not the full version.
When I click "Cancel" after having being patient for half an hour or so, the HP software starts to "uninstall". At a certain point my Vista system displays the message "HP Uninstaller failed" (translated from my Dutch version). So the driver does not install properly and does not uninstall properly either.
By the way, Hewlett Packard is not visible under Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and features. There are no HP items displayed there.
But it does exist on my system, in the C root: C:\HP_CM1312_series_full_solution_v5.0_AM-EMEA
Please help. I have some important documents to scan. I've spent two precious weekends already on this issue.

I left the computer trying to connect to the HP all night, I guess I was hoping for a miracle.... NOT.
Uninstalling gives the error code 33432656 (Installation log)
== start message ==
Now Launching = X:\\hpzdui01.exe -I XXX -f X:\DIVins??.. DAT.
Whoa!!! We've already entered EndDialog! I'm just going to exit.
RUN: Driver UI Plug-In exits returning 50
Exit code = 50
=== end message===
Additional info on hpzuidui01.exe found on the internet:
hpzuidui01.exe
HP Installer Driver UI Plug-In. Program used by the drivers installation program for some HP printers. In principle this program should not be running after the program has been installed properly and the PC rebooted but, unfortunately, on a few PC it does continue to run nevertheless.
This program originates from a particular range of drivers whose installation were problematic at the best of times. The annoying thing about having this program running when it should not, is that when it is running there are two other of its siblings which run also, HPZNUI01.EXE, and HPZOPT01.EXE, and those 3 programs together use up to 34Mb of memory unnecessarily.
Problem : These programs belong to a particular set of HP drivers which are notoriously buggy and unless you have a lot of time on your hand, and patience, we recommend living with the problem and not attempting to correct it. Seriously !

Please try:
1. navigate to the C:// HP full solution folder and open it
2. go to util folder and open it
3. open the CCC folder
4. scroll down to the scrubber application (it will be the first in the scrubber list)
5. click and run the scrubber application
6. then click and run the UPDScrub application (again it will be the first in the UPDScrub list)
Once these are done running. Please re-boot your computer. Then download the most current drivers cm1315 HP full solution from hp.com

Thank you for your tip Auntie Em, but it did not change a thing. Installation freezes at step 3/4, at the magic 94%. During my internet searches I found out that this freezing at the magic 94% is a common issue with HP printers. I find lots of questions how to tackle this problem on the internet, but I don't find the solution.
The link you provided Auntie Em for the latest drivers is for Windows 7. My system is Vista 32bit.
As far as I can see on the HP website the most recent version of the HP Color Laser Jet CM1312 MFP Full Solution is Version 5.0 of 19 aug 2009
I stumbled upon Driver Genius, is that an option?
I feel there are several issues here:
1. After all the attempts to install the HP Full Solution I suppose my system has become "polluted" by bits and pieces of HP software. I need a complete cleanup.
2. Windows Vista automatically detects any USB device, including the printer, and automatically installs the corresponding drivers. How do I prevent this automatic driver detection? Windows Vista DOES NOT install the full solution.
1. Full uninstall of HP software
- gr_uninst.exe (see above) only works for Windows XP and 2000 and only for version 4.2.0 of the driver.
- I read on the web there are HP installation CDs with similar software (X:\Util\ccc\Uninstall-L1 trough L4). This seems to work with the same uninstall levels as gr_uninst.exe. I don't have this on my CD, so I can't try it out.
http://www.out-of-warranty.com/three-ways-to-unins
- Auntie Em's tip:C:\Hewlett Packard Folder\Util\ccc\scrubber.exe and UPDScrub.exe
I performed all the above options. None of them helped me to solve the problem.
After each failed installation I use Registry Cleaner (Norton and Uniblue) and I delete any root hubs
Control Panel –> Computer Management and maintenance –> Device Management -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers -> delete.
2. Disable automatic detection of USB drivers by Windows Vista
I did find out how to disable auto-detection of drivers through a network, but not how to disable auto-detection of drivers through a USB connection.
Microsoft recommends to use the automatically installed drivers, HP recommends it too for Windows 7 in the link in the reply above of Auntie EM. On most sites I read strong recommendations NOT to use the pre-installed drivers of Microsoft Windows but to use ALWAYS the drivers supplied by the manufacturer (up-to-date and with full features).

I found a workaround. THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION FOR THE USB CONNECTION PROBLEM.
I bought an ethernet switch, connected the CM1312nfi through the switch to the computer, so I DID NOT USE THE USB CABLE but an ethernet cable. During installation there was some terrifying hesitation at 94% (oh no, not again....), but.... the full solution is back on my computer. Hallelujah.

I just joined this forum to say to Artym.... that i been going thru the same hell for 6 months on this.....This printer belongs to my office....
if it was my own, it would already end up parachuting from my office 12th floor window.
By the way, i even escalate this to HP. The engineer from India repeated the same process over and over again...Yet it was not solve... Sending me email over email whether the "solution" given by them was solve.
Though i said for 20th time their solution does not work, they yet coming back with another engineer to "so called" escalated tier 2 engineer. Problem NOT SOLVED!

I want to mention that this problem also occurs on Windows 7 (32 bits). Never been able to find a solution since I installed this OS on my office desktop 3 years ago. Basically this printer worked fine for one year under Windows XP until I decided to switch to Windows 7. I cannot understand how HP can release drivers without testing them. This is not an isolated problem.
