Office Jet Pro 8500 initial setup never finishes...

I just had this printer delivered the yesterday and after assembling it, I plugged it in so that I could go through the initialisation process.  It came up with the expected message: "Checking device. This process might take several minutes. Do not turn off the device; do not open or close any covers" so I settled down to wait the 20 mins that was stated on the user guide sheet... and I waited and waited!

When I first tried this yesterday evening I left the printer for nearly 1 hour but came back to find the message still showing so then I left it running overnight but in the morning that message was still there...not good  :smileysad:

Since then I have tried unplugging the printer and starting the whole process again including checking that everything I had put into it was seated properly (all tapes/cardboard removed, ink cartridges, print heads and the lumpy thing at the back :smileytongue:, but now after more than an hour of waiting still no luck...

I've searched here without being able to find a clear indication of the problem and I can't find anyone who is stuck in the same situation. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

Disable the windows firewall and disable your virus scanner ...... see if that helps.

IMO the printer seems to be defective. It shouldn't stay in this screen for too long. At least not for a day. Since you've already tried unplugging the power cable(I assume), I suggest you just get it exchanged from the store\retailer you purchased it from, for another piece.

Re: Office Jet Pro 8500 initial setup never finishes...

Thanks for the suggestions

I'm giving it one more try after doing everything one last time! That is: unplugging the power cable, reseating all cartridges and ink heads, removing and replacing both the paper and the duplexer plus wiggling anything else that looked even vaguely relevant... now I'm waiting for 30minutes to see what happens then I'll give up and get on to Amazon - hopefully their returns people will sort things out for me!

Re: Office Jet Pro 8500 initial setup never finishes...

I bought my printer today - exact same problem. I will take it back to Staples and get a replacement - hopefully the next one will not give me the same or any other errors!!

Clearly this is a known problem - why can't HP address it? The time spent installing can run into hours!!

Re: Office Jet Pro 8500 initial setup never finishes...

I know this post is old... but having the same exact problems tonight and this is frustrating!  I already took back the HP 510 because it made horrible loud squeaking noises when printing.  So I got this one and it won't even install!  Anyone had success fixing this?  I really hate to DRAG another printer back!!!

Does anyone too if you should install the CD first before trying the touch screen setup?
