OfficeJet 6500 E709n Can not printer VIA IP Address

[ Edited ]

Hi I need a little help.

I have an OfficeJet 6500 in an office environment. In our office we use IP Printing for everything.  I have reserved the IP address through ethernet for our printer through our networking department.  Our company will not reserve IP address to printer through wireless, but that should not matter.  We have tons of other HP printers hardwired with a reserved IP address an all the wireless computers can print to them. Anyway we are setup correctly with the printer in the network.

Here is the issue:

Mac OS 10.5.8

Can print USB

Can NOT print wirelessly to the printer via it's reserved IP.

Can NOT print ethernet to the printer via it's reserved IP.

Can print through Bonjour when connected to the network by ethernet.

Can NOT print through Bonjour when connected to the network by wireless.

Win XP Pro

Can print USB

Can print ethernet to the printer via it's reserved IP.

This computer does not have wireless.

I need the Macs to be able to print to the printer via it's reserved IP when the computers are connected by wireless.  When you try to print to it via IP the computer says the printer is busy.

What is up with this printer?  Does it need a firmware update?

A. I have installed drivers on the Mac.

B. I have used generic post scripts.

C. Tried new user accounts.

D. I have verified that the Macs can see it. They find it when I add it through IP and they can IP to the printer to adjust settings.

E. Reset printing system.

I am starting to think this printer does network via IP with the Macs. Which would be a sad case of false advertisement by HP since the machine is described as IP printing capable and compatible with both OSs.  Printing via Bonjour is not IP printing.

I really hope that someone out here in cyber space has an answer that will resolve this.

Just so I understand, can you access the Officejet 6500's internal web page by browsing to its IP address from your Macs?

Does the printer appear on the Bonjour bookmark list from Safari (Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Bonjour)?

Re: OfficeJet 6500 E709n Can not printer VIA IP Address

Thank you for your help!

I can web to the printer from the Mac via it's IP wireless or wired.  I can also add the printer via it's IP and the system can see the printer, add it's drivers, setup, etc. (wireless or wired)  The issue comes when it tries to print to it. (wireless or wired)  It will say it's busy when it trys to print even though it's not.

I can not see the printer via Bonjour through Safari when I am connected via wireless connection.

I can see the printer via Bonjour through Safari when I am connected via ethernet connection.

I am concerned that HP is relying on Bonjour to network this printer to Macs.  Bonjour does not work that well in an office situation.  We have a separate controller for wireless.  So any Bonjour device that's not on the wireless controller can not be seen by the wireless devices.  That is why the Bonjour is only working when it's connected via ethernet, because the printer is connected via ethernet.  This is why we rely on IP printing not Bonjour. That is also why we purchased the 6500, because it said it was an IP printer and it was compatible with Mac and Win.

So we are still at the same dilemma how can we make the Macs IP print to the 6500? Is it possible?! I hope so!

Re: OfficeJet 6500 E709n Can not printer VIA IP Address

Was this problem ever solved?

I have the same issue. I have a Windows 7 PC and a Mac running OS X 10.5.8. I originally set up the Officejet 6500 by connecting it to my wireless router with an ethernet cable and reserving the IP address. Windows machine also connected to the router by ethernet. The windows computer can print just fine, but the Mac cannot. I have even tried connecting the Mac to the router by ethernet, so that I now have a fully wired network (airport is disabled) and still cannot print. I can see the printer levels and print a test page, but cannot print any document. What is going on here?

Re: OfficeJet 6500 E709n Can not printer VIA IP Address

Does your Mac see the printer from Safari?  From Safari, select Bookmarks then select Show All Bookmarks.  On the left Safari pane, select Bonjour.

Is the printer listed in the main Safari window?  If so, does double clicking on the printer name bring up the printer's internal web page?

If this works, then we know the printer is on the network and that the Mac can access it.  At this point, I would recommend reseting the Mac's printing system and then reinstalling the printer.  Information on resetting your Mac printing system can be found here (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341).

Re: OfficeJet 6500 E709n Can not printer VIA IP Address

I was having problems with this for DAYS!  Here were the symptoms:

The printer I was triying to connect to is an HP Officejet 6500 E709n.  My Macs (OSX Snow Leapard and OSX Lion) would not detect the printer over the network.  When I tried adding the printer, only the "HP Fax" would get detected - but it wasn't a bonjour-detected device.  Both Wireless and Wired printer detection would fail.  The only way I was able to print was USB - which defeats the purpose of a network-capable printer.

I tried changing the printer's network settings (DHCP/Manual).

I tried "Resetting Printing System" on both Macs.

I tried Restarting the printer AND restarting computers AND restarting my router.

Finally, I thought of changing the printer's host name: Networking->General->Device and the **bleep** thing started working all of a sudden!  I'm not familiar enough with how bonjour works, but maybe changing the hostname forced a re-broadcast of itself?
