OfficeJet 7680 won't reinstall

It just won't stay connected over the wired ethernet connection. test page sticks in queue but prints when the computer comes up after a reboot. I finally just connected a USB cable and it found everything and worked. I tried to just change the port to the network port and it would go offline again. changing the port back left it offline until I rebooted. so for now it is connected to the non-lexmark printer via USB and shared. the lexmark computer can print to it via the share; however, it doesn't have solution center installed which leaves me no way to scan from the lexmark computer. is there a way to get inside the various files from the installation package and just install the solution center? I see no way to download it separately.

The solution center is always part of the full install.

yes, but so far on that computer every install has had the newer version is already installed fatal error.  I'll probably just live with it although I may try the disk that came with the J6400 that I have at home to see if it'll work at the office to get the solution center installed. yes, I know, Plan B would be to uninstall all the Lexmark stuff and then try the Full again but the Lexmark is my check and envelope printer and there isn't a lot to be gained by uninstalling it if it is going to break the HP when I reinstall it.  I can live without scanning from that computer easier than I can live without printing to the Lexmark.

unless you have a miracle up your sleve, I give up.  I thought I had the non-lexmark working fine connected with USB instead of ethernet until I tried to scan something.  the solution center refused to scan saying that Photosmart wasn't properly installed.  I looked and it didn't have an icon so I tried running Full again and it asked me if I wanted to install more software and offered Photosmart.  so far so good.  so I installed it but when it finished I got the same error.  so I've got it working as a printer.  I'm not worried about using Solution Center to fax as I can always print what I want to fax and then just push buttons on the printer to fax.  I would like to scan but it doesn't look like it is meant to me.  it used to work.  go figure.

At this point I would re-install the O/S.
