Hello all - I have searched this forum to insure there was no solution unknown or untried for this. My challenge is, I had the program on my Lenovo T61 laptop with Vista business when my system crashed and needed to re-install program.
I have down loaded the updated version from the HP site and still Am not able to install. I receive error message "install failure" at step 3/4 @ 94% completion. There are no codes at all to this failure. I have tried installing without my kaspersky virus suite installed, this did not help, I have gone through L1, L2, L3 & L4 uninstall and this did not help. I have cleared all the print drivers from my system and that did not help. I can install when connected to the device through PNP, yet I need to install and operate wirelessly! And many combinations of the above...
I have followed the guidelines in "Cannot Install this Hardware" bulletin and that did not work.
I will show, in part, the log from my system where the failure takes place. If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know. HP nor Lenovo has been able to advise, they blame each other for the problem.
INFO: Installing INF file 'c:\users\owner\appdata\local\temp\7zs3896.tmp\hpw
INFO: Could not open file C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpw
ERROR: PnP Install failed. (Error code 0x3EE: The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.)
INFO: Attempting to rollback ...
TIA...

No, I have not. Yet I have plenty of HP's techs who say they can help each time I call in. To date I have erased all signs of any printer ever loaded on my computer and now have to go back to each office and reistall each driver.
Yet still I cannot load the program. And to think HP wants me to renew my maintenance. Yeah right... I have been trying to get this done for over six months to no avail...
Good luck. If you find a way, please let me know..

I too am having this error. When I called in, they want me to renew my maintenance as well. I think this is a rip off for them having an error and want to charge money to help. I am barely over a year owning this machine.
I can still use and print from my macbook pro wirelessly, but my pc's are SOL with connecting to the printer, let alone even being able to use the office center software for the printer.
Please help.

Please, please, please do NOT allow them to talk you into removing printers or other drivers to see "if that solves" it. I did this only to lose many of these, with no real time to back up either. You do not even have to guess, that the five for six solutions advanced did not work! Same line "I assure you we will get this resolved!" or "Thank you for callilng, I understand your problem, we will work together to resolve this...." blah blah blah... still no resolution, for me, after all this time.
The next suggestion was to re-instal everything on my HD and I said that was not an option now.
Good luck for you as well... maybe you can find help sooner than I have been able to..

I uninstalled all hp drivers for the L7780 dueto problems. Now thedriverscannot be installed:
The following lines where retrieved from the installation error logs.
Now Launching=X:\hpzwrp01.exe -m dpinstxml_vista "-*Stub" "143482""/rerun" "1" -l XXX -f X:\hpwind05.dat -Validate No dat -Validate No = Application didnot return ERROR_SUCCESS. Returned 0x643 Exit Code= 1603
The printer network connection worksand the printer web pages are accessable.
I have tried every thing that HP has suggested.
Any ideas or hints would be welcome

This solved it for me :
My profound thanks for this link. It is beyond me how a printer driver can become such a huge issue shame on microsoft or HP.

What if tech support had you manually delete the HP file on the C Drive, and now you can't uninstall anything or install anything ?

Do you understand the phrase "screwed"? I had the same situation and the techs immediately disavowed any connection to it, and finally said I needed to re-install my full system. Of course I agreed up-front that they, HP and their Tech Engineers, are not responsible for any damage or loss of data due to their negligence.
My printer still will not install on my system.
Let us know how you make out.
Good Luck..

I have 4 laptops that would no longer allow me to use my HP Solution Center all-in-one scanner option for 5 months, tried HP help, but no resolution.
Problem was solved doing the following steps, anyone can do this, you do not need to be a tech wizard.
This procedure may work for a number of operating systems, XP--Vista--and 7. I have all three. It will take about 1-3 hours depending on your computer speed and 'start-up' time.
First, go to the HP web site, type in your printer model, and operating system.
Download to your desktop the following to programs--a diagnostic tool for removing drivers,(it is called a 'scrubber' once it is downloaded, then download the newest version from the HP website a 'full-version' driver software for your printer.
Second, double-click on the icon that was downloaded for removing drivers. At the bottom of the list you will find (5) items that must be done in order. They are uninstall, L1, L2, L3, and L4 uninstall. Do each one at a time, and agree to a system restart after each until all (5) are completed. (DO NOT TEST YOUR PRINTER AS REQUESTED. JUST RESTART)
Third, go to control panels, and double-click 'programs', scroll down and remove the HP application for your printer model,
I then do a 'disk-cleanup' from the windows file, (this may not be required, but just wanted to get rid of the old data.)
Now this may be the most IMPORTANT PART---I believe my problem has always been the 'registry files' that have caused my problems with the printer. I have Norton 360, and under the scans option, I use the 'registry clean-up' box and it would remove all the 'broken registry files', many I think because of trying to re-install the printer drivers. (This option did not work without doing the first three steps first.)
Fourth, now double-click the 'full version icon for your HP printer' on your desktop. It will probably still find some residue from a former install, and ask to remove. Do so, and then you can start the new install.
Start the new install, and then connect a USB cable and/or Ethernet cable when requested. When completed open the 'Solutions Center' while the cable is connected and print a test page. If your printer has a scan option try that also. I believe it will work now.
Fifth, I also go wireless, disconnect your USB and/or Ethernet cable, double-click the 'full version icon' again on your desktop again, and this time select 'add a device', it will discover your wireless printer, select it, and it will install into the 'Solution Center',
when install is complete print a test page and also try a scan.
Hope this works for many of you that been having my problems for 5 months.
