Officejet 6310 - 2 way communication

A friend just got new equipment and gave me his old 6310 All in One:-  He could not find the original installation disk so I downloaded the software from HP's website.  It is working for the most part, but I cannot check the ink levels through the settings/toolbox.  My Pc gives me a message that says it "cannot establish 2 way communication with the device".

I am using windows XP, SP3.  Since I am able to print documents etc., it appears that the PC is able to send info to the printer, but cannot get info  back so something must not have set up right.  HELP?
