Hi there,
It wont work from the printer.
Go to All Programs and open Windows Fax and Scan.
It should scan in from there.
It has taken me 4 hours downloading drivers...AND IT IS OH SO SIMPLE!!!!

hI there,
i have been at it for 4 hours downloading drivers etc and generally pulling my hair out.
You dont need to switch wireless off. It will work wether it is on or not.
Go to All Programs and open Windows Fax and scan.
Top left of screen it will say NEW SCAN, click that and it should work. It did for me.
HP dont give anything away...its all trial and error.
Hope it sorts it

Just wished to update this thread:
There is a new utility offered by HP as of 2-2-2011 called HP Scan Diagnostic Utility ( HPSDU.exe ).
After trying many of the items and having no luck, I was able to find this utility which worked beautifully!
I have a brand new HP laptop running Windows 7 (64bit) and a new Officejet 6500 that I couldn't get to scan.
It took 3 runs through the Utility - each time getting farther until it worked!
Hope it's able to solve your issues as well! ![]()

I just purchased the Officejet 6500A.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and the printer is connected wirelessly.
At first , if you try to scan from the printer to the computer, the printer won't see the computer. Scanning directly from the HP software scan facility worked just fine. A quick browse of the help centre, informed me to go into the HP software and in the scanner settings, select activate scan from this computer. Having done that I can now scan directly from the printer menu, through the installed HP software and from windows scan and fax.
So for those still experiencing issues, installing the latest version of software for this printer will definitely save you a lot of time.
Ensure you remove any previous versions of the software first - remove the printer ( not just disable - actually right click and remove) from the control panel and remove the drivers from hardware manager - ensure the printer isnt directly connected to the pc (usb) and then reboot. Download and install the latest software, ensure that the printer is re-installed in control panel, then in the main screen of the HP software (programs/HP/HP Officejet 6500 ****/HP Officejet 6500 **** (black icon of the printer)) under the title 'Scanner Actions' click activate scan to computer

Hey I found a simple solution to the HP Officejet 6500 Windows 7 scanner bug.
1. Plug the unit in via USB and let Windows 7 install the drivers, it should have mapped the SD port on the HP6500, you may need to assign a drive letter.
2. Simply put an SD card in the slot.
3. On the printer press the Start scan button and it will ask you to choose a file type, unless you set it up earlier.
4. Scan, it wil scan to the SD card.
5. In windows open the drive and you will see the "scan" folder.
I put in a 4 gb SD card they were giving away for free at Micro Center. Works every time.

Hi- Your letter exactly duplicates the problem that I am having...but there is a lovely icon that indicates the "Problem Solved"...When I click on it, it merely brings me to a list of more people who have had the same issues. Were they able to solve the problem for you? I am totally disgruntled with HP support. I spent almost two hour on the phone with a tech who kept telling me that the printer was fine and my computer was the problem. NOT good customer service!!!
Thank you!

Maybe this practical solution is helpful, I did recognize all the problems mentioned and then all of a sudden came to this solution. In Picasa 3 go to import under import from, go to officejet6500 Twain and scanning started immediately

You will not believe this. I called about the problem of scanning to computer 3 months ago. 4 different technicians were unable to do a thing. it will scan to computer on an XP machine and a Windows 7 32 bit machine, but not 64 bit. So I scan toa memory card and then use the card to transfer manually to the computer.
Here's the real kicker. I called today to see if any progress has been made. he tech told me that I was the only person who has ever called support about this problem.
Great support. they even told me the [roblem was the computer - which when I called was a brand new out of the box HP computer.
