Officejet Pro 8500 Premier - Hangs on First startup

I just bought this printer. After assembling it, I plugged it in.

It the message:

"Checking device. This process might take several minutes. Do not turn off the device;dp mpt p[em pr c;pse amy covers."

It hangs on this message for about 30 minutes.. then the display darkens as if it has been turned off. If I press the power button it goes back to the same message.

This has been going on for about 8 hours now. Think it's broken :smileywink:

Since then I have tried unplugging and starting over the process, only after more than an hour of waiting. No dice.

I can not find anyone with the same problem. There isn't anything about it in the very sparse user guides with this device.

Any ideas?

I struggled with the same problem for quite some time. I removed the printhead cartridges, cleaned them and shook them really hard.

After that, the printer could finish the first startup sequence. I hope this might help you.

I had the same problem. HP Help desk actually helped....

Try re-seating all of the parts you installed, the print heads, the ink tanks, AND the document duplexor on the back. My duplexor apparently was not locked in properly and caused the hang up. The next time I started the diagnostic process it took the full 20 minutes as indicated but it did complete successfully.

Re: Officejet Pro 8500 Premier - Hangs on First startup

I tried everything listed, but still nothing. Don't know if HP looks here but:

Something that might help in future releases is for the screen to display it's status as it goes so you can tell if it's hung up or still working on a process.  Disabling the power saver until the first initialization is complete would be great as well.

Another thing would be for the print heads to automatically park when the lid is opened.  I had to fight with mine to get the "*" key trick to work so I could remove and reseat them.

This one's going back tomorrow because it simply refuses to come up. I went back to where I bought it and picked up a Canon of the same class.  Got it connected and it came up right away.  The HP is still trying to boot up.  If it's this unstable just getting set up, I'm not sure I want to risk wasting the time to  fight with it during normal use.

Re: Officejet Pro 8500 Premier - Hangs on First startup

You're correct--after all, it's just a damned printer, not a rocket to the moon.  I wonder just what all the

printer is checking when "checking device?"  Must be something that's not as important as, say, those

things that actually make the printer operate.

I am trying this solution, but if it doesn't work, oh, well.  I'll just have to have a Canon or Brother--plus

a huge amount of enmity for HP.

It's outrageous.

Same problem here. The cartages are seated all the way the little tri-angle guides line up just fine.

What a pain, I hope HP solves this for me.

Re: Officejet Pro 8500 Premier - Hangs on First startup

Update:

It seemed to be working for a while, but the print head alignment failed. I later looked at
a color copy of a check I did and saw there was no black in the print. So I attempted to
copy a color document in B & W and got a blank page.

Now is back in what seems to be an endless loop of diagnosis and print head cleaning.

The scanner worked great for a while when it seemed to work. The paper jam seems to be gone
just the endless nothing but diagnosis and cleaning the print head. I should be out of  ink
soon and never printed anything use full.

I've got the same problem with my NEW HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 and can't fix it. This printer replaced another that wouldn't print after less than 100 pages. This is outrageous.

Re: Officejet Pro 8500 Premier - Hangs on First startup

I had the same problem and reseating everything did not help. However, I was curious why the print carriage didn't move past the space just to the right of the loading area. I noticed that one of the ink tubes was misdirected into the carriage area. With a flashlight, I could see that the magenta tube was no longer seated in the black channel just under the front lip. I was able to pull the black channel (which also held another tube), slide the magenta tube back into the channel and reattach the channel assembly over the little tab. All of this is on the front wall of the carriage printing area, but was looking throught the print cartridge access area to see that I was getting it done.
