First of all you are very welcome. Lets see if we can avoid the last resort of re-installing the operating system. Are you using the CD or the software from the website? I would suggest trying the following while it might seem nothing has installed some of it may have partially installed and is causing trouble. The following proceedure will perform a special uninstall. If using method 2 below you may notice a few 7z folders since you have tried to install multiple times. You won't need those folders after you run either the L3 or L4.

From Original installation CD:

1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer

2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open

3. Open folder Util

4. Open folder CCC

5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe

6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer

7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools

8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player

9. Download the full feature software and drivers

10. Run the download to reinstall the printer

If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:

1. Type %temp% in the run field

2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)

3. Open folder Util

4. Open folder CCC

5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe

6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer

7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools

8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player

Sounds like your computer may be contributing to the install failures. Need to run the scrub steps again, and then let me know if you still have issues installing the printer?

Try using the scrubber built into the CD or Download.

Completed the scrub steps and re-installed according to your instructions.  Still with the same error with Photosmart Essentials.

It appears that the operating system is contributing to the failed installs. You will need to run a full system recovery on the computer, and then install the printer before you install any additional software. Remember to back up your data before running the recovery on the computer.

I do not have the capabilities of running a recovery on my system. I have upgraded to a point where my operating system disk will not work. I would have to format my hard disk and reinstall everything. That does no strike me as being a feasible option. Thanks for your help so far. You were looking for numbers for the error message but apparently the numbers I supplied do not correspond to anything.

I can print but am not able to scan from the control program.
