Hi eagleuser,
I have tested this senario on a machine here, and have determined that the printer will not be able to detect a change in paper size from within the same document. You can assign a paper size for each tray, but there is no way to detect the change of a paper size within the same document.
How often do you have this type of printing senario?

I actually have this scenario quite often, usually with PDF files that have 40-60 pages. Currently I just figure out which pages are letter and list them in the print window to print, and then the legal.
I would have thought this printer could do it, but still a great printer, and now I feel better that I am not missing something. I guess since the second tray is an addon, HP did not think of that functionality. Maybe as a feature request, since I would think it is something in the software?
Thanks

Even when logged-in as administrator on a Windows 7 Home PC, I am unable to set the default paper type for trays as shown. These are grayed-out. Any suggestions?

Hi Danhen310,
Try the following steps which should help resolve the issue.
1) Power down the printer
2) Remove 2nd tray assembly completely.
2) Power up the printer without 2nd tray assembly
3) Power down the printer
4) Install 2nd tray assembly
5) Power up the printer
