Photosmart C7280 wireless printing won't work

I'm trying to get my new HP Pavillion g series laptop to work wirelessly with my C7280 printer.  i am using the printer's correct IP address, and the printer did install, but it won't print a test page, and it won't print other print jobs reliably.  The busy light on the printer will flash for a few minutes, then it either spits out an empty pageor a partially printed page and indicates a paper jam (there are no paper jams).   This looks like IP or other network conflicts to me, but I;m not a networking guru.

The printer is also connected via USB to my desktop which runs XP--could this be part of the problem?.  

 

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The printer supports simultaneous USB and wireless connection without any problems.

Now are you able to print from the XP computer without any problems? This way, we can determine if the printer hardware is working fine or not.

Yes, printing with XP machine works just fine.  Printing from the laptop (wireless or via ethernet) also works fine as long as I have the XP machine turned on.  It is just when only the printer and my laptop are on and operating in wireless mode that printing does not work.  Thanks!

I think the printer has been installed incorrectly on your laptop. Rather than accessing the printer directly, it is being shared through the desktop. That's why you can't print when the desktop is off.

Do you know the IP address of the printer?

Ip address is set up correctly.  I re-installed the printer, along with a newer router, and printing seems to be ok now, just very slow and not in fast draft mode (my normal default).  I guess now I'm probably just looking a configuration problem.

 

Progress is painful.....
