Print quality stinks after changing cartridge - HP6500A Plus

Recently purchased an HP6500A Plus and it worked beautifully (great grayscales); however, after changing the black ink cartridge, all black and white prints are coming out poorly.  I've attached an example of how they used to come out, here: http://i.imgur.com/MvUY2.jpg and how they're coming out now.  How can I fix this?
