Printer won't scan or run HP Setup assistant

I've always had this problem with my Photosmart C4280 All in One Printer. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times using my iMac G5, but when it gets the HP Setup Assistant, there is nothing to select to setup. I assume this is the setup for the scanning because I've never had a problem with printing from my computer. When I hit Scan Pro from the HP folder, it says it doesn't see a scanning device attached. Conversely, when I hit the Scan button on the printer, it says there is no USB connection to the computer, even though there is. 

CS won't help me when I call because the printer is past one year warrantee.

I have the same issue. Can print but have to use the Image Capture on my MAC OS X 10.6.2 to scan. Nothing listed in Setup Assistant or HP All-in-One Device Chooser either. But it shows up when choosing Select Printer I registered it when it was installed as directed after purchase in July 2007. Any ideas would help.

How can I get rid of the annoying set up assistant on my mac that keeps popping up since I can't use it to setup anyway?  It prints, just doesn't let me complete setup becuase nothing is listed.
