Did you ever get an answer to this question? I'm having the same problem on my Officejet 4500.

no answers so far. i spoke with HP help desk, and their only suggestion is to uninstall and reinstall HP software, but i haven't done that yet. they seem to think that maybe some of the drivers did not get installed correctly. by the way, i also have a Mac, and installed the same installation disk and had no problems whatsoever.
hopefully someone will have a better suggestion soon.
good luck with yours as well

I have the same problem with one bought two days ago. Really a bummer. Ready to take it back and get something else.

sorry to hear that. i installed the software for my Mac, and it works fine. it's just for my Windows computer.
did you try to deal with the help desk at all? i found them to be absolutely worthless. no help at all.
i plan to take the time to uninstall and re-install this weekend and hope that it was just some drivers that were not downloaded properly the first install.
we'll keep you guys updated.

Did the uninstall/reinstall resolve the issue?

no it did not. i used on newest online install package to make sure i had the latest drivers. i spoke again with HP helpdesk and they could not figure it out either. they had me run a diagnostics tool, which said that i had a problem with a Windows Imaging software, and that Microsoft should be able to solve it for me. Microsoft said they would try to help me, but if they are successful, it would cost me $59. I have not had them try it yet. it seems absurd to have to pay more money to get a HP unit to work.
i may return it this weekend.
have you had any luck or any suggestions from anyone?

This is a tough issue to crack. Open Device Manager, is the printer listed under Imaging Devices? Open Control Panel and then open Scanner and Cameras. Is the printer listed here?
If the printer is not listed in Device Manager then a problem happened during the installation of the printer software. If the printer is not listed in Scanners and Cameras then I think there is a problem with the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) component of MS Windows. The scan component of this product is dependent on the WIA component of MS Windows to work.

i will check tonight when i get home to see if the printer appears under Scanners and Cameras.
if something happened to my WIA component, how can i fix that? i have been searching for a solution, but so far have not found one.
thanks

Binary Zen, I checked my Device Manager and under the heading "Imaging Devices" my HP 8600, my HP G4050 ScanJet and the integrated webcam are on the list.
any suggestions are appreciated.
