Sending scanned documents in text to Word

I have an HP 2400 printer/scanner/copier purchased recently .  When I scan text to be edited  I set it to the black/white option and the RTF setting to go Word Student 2010. It scans to Word but never in an editable form. How do I  send it in  text editable form?  Help!
