Am attempting to download and install updated (newer, full feature) software for my OfficeJet Pro L7555 off of HP web site but am told that my HP Pavilion a1540n desktop (XP with sp3) is already equipped with newer software and that I should just plug it in. I've run the HP trouble shooting site +20 times with the result of 'Fatal Error' and 'MSI.MSI_BPD_SCAN' and have removed ALL (probably too much) HP printer software via the control panel. I've had this problem before and successfully resolved it but recently (erroneously) reformatted my HD, lost all repair notes, and can't reminder the fix. HELP!

I would suggest checking out the following article. It deals with Fatal Errors and should help resolve your issue. If you continue to have trouble please provide any additional information such as what happened when you tried the document.

I went through the 'USB Printer Installation Troubleshooting' BUT with the same results. The "Fatal Error" and 'MSI.MSI_BPD_SCAN" appears after 30% of page 1 of 9 of the installation process (after the extract) with the updated software from the web site. When I attempt to reinstall from my CD I get 'newer software already exists...' . Also, HP Solution Center and HP Imaging Device are gone.

Hello mikeez
Lets try running the L3 or L4 uninstall this should remove any traces of the printer drivers. Afterwards I would try to run the installation again and see if you still receive the same errors.
From Original installation CD:
1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer
2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
9. Download the full feature software and drivers
10. Run the download to reinstall the printer
If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:
1. Type %temp% in the run field
2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
9. Download the full feature software and drivers
10. Run the download to reinstall the printer

This worked great but is critical that the procedure be followed precisely. I've been through each of these steps before but never in this order. Now, is working great.
