deskjet 2050 Trouble Scanning

[ Edited ]

I'm having a hard time scanning with my  deskjet 2050- J510a... It keeps saying "an error occurred while scanning"... Could the error be that I have no ink cartridges installed? Are they needed to scan? This might be extraneous info but I am running Windows 7 and when I try to preview the scan it says the following: "An error occurred while setting scanner properties. If another program is scanning please wait for it to complete and try again."... of course there isn't another program trying ro scan anything... Will someone please help?

Is this in the wrong place or is it a bad question?
