ethernet light on officejet pro 8500 premier not on and printer not recognized on network

Hello,  I'm trying to replace an hp laserjet 5 that is on a wired network connection with the Officejet pro 8500 premier that will also be a wired network connection.  First of all, the ethernet light on the printer does not light up.  Second of all, the printer is not being recognized on the network.  When I try to install the printer on the computer, it cannot find any printer connected to the network.  Any ideas?
